Trium Entertainment and Everyday Health's YouTube show will air on amost 200 ABC affiliates
Trium Entertainment and Everyday Health have made a deal for “Recipe Rehab,” a YouTube show in which chefs reimagine fattening dishes to make them healthier, to air on nearly 200 ABC affiliates, the companies announced on Monday.
According to the companies, this marks the first show from YouTube’s 100-channel premium programming initiative, announced last November, to move to television.
The new season of the show has already been shot and will debut Oct. 6 as part of the affiliates’ Saturday morning education bloc, which is programmed by Litton Entertainment Group. Clips from those episodes will appear on Everyday Health, the YouTube channel on which it debuted in April.
“We’re doing something we felt was a really relatable idea,” Jared Tobman, co-founder of Trium, told TheWrap. “We take family favorites, America’s greatest recipes that we all love to eat, and make a healthier version without sacrificing what you love about it, the taste.”
Trium is an independent production company founded and run by Mark Koops, Tobman and Eric Day. Both Koops and Tobman are former Reveille Studios executives while Day came from Microsoft.
Pushing the show to television signals that despite the growth of online video, nothing has replaced the audience for traditional television just yet. Many of the branded channels in YouTube’s initiative have struggled out of the gate.
However, the former television executives believe they are seeing results online, where they can establish multiple revenue streams beyond advertising. They have designed their content to cross platforms, and this show in particular felt like a good fit for television.
Tobman said that “Recipe Rehab” reminded him of “The Biggest Loser,” a Reveille show, in combining competition with an inspirational message.
The YouTube episodes of the show range from five to ten minutes, but now that “Recipe Rehab” is taking over a 30-minute slot and headed to TV, it will update its format and cast.
Danny Boome is joining as host while Laura Vitale and Mareya Ibrahim will stay on from the YouTube show. Celebrity chefs like Govind Armstrong and Spike Mendelsohn will also appear.
