Royal weddings are so humdrum: Millions of people tearfully tune in to watch the hours-long, once-or-twice in a lifetime spectacle of a magical fairy tale come to life. Yawn.
Which is why Rupert Murdoch's BSkyB is reportedly looking to spice things up by broadcasting the April 29 wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in 3D. The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported the news, which we know is true because we really, really want it to be true.
The satellite broadcasting company would broadcast the signal to British cinemas and 3D TV-enabled homes to add a -- prepare for mandatory joke that will appear in every story about this -- new dimension to the proceedings.
Discussions with Clarence House and Buckingham Palace have not begun, “but if the planets align, then this is the kind of big-event TV that would definitely be a contender for our strategy of offering 3D coverage,” a Sky insider told the Reporter.
Sky already shows English Premier League soccer, and has aired political debate, operas, concerts, and ballet on its own 3D channel. The 3D service is only accessible to the 3 million-plus homes with Sky’s high definition set-top box, and ill-fitting-but-worth-it glasses for everyone gathered around the telly.
Of course, by April, some enterprising company will make this available to American audiences too, right?
