Showrunners to TV Acad: Don't Cut Us from Emmys

The Writers Guild is stepping up its protests against Emmy's planned changes.

The Guild just issued a letter signed by a slew of TV showrunners blasting the TV Academy for its decision to cut some key writing awards out of next month's telecast and imploring the Academy to change its mind. The statement comes 30 minutes before Emmy producer Don Mischer is set to meet the press.

"Medium" creator Glen Gordon Caron, on stage right now at the CBS press tour, explained why he signed the letter.

"Shows are written," he said. "A big part of a show's success or failure (is writing). It seems short-sighted.:

Here's the statement, and the signers:

We, the undersigned showrunners and executive producers of television's current line-up of programs, oppose the Academy of Television Arts and Science's decision to remove writing awards from the live telecast. This decision conveys a fundamental understatement of the importance of writers in the creation of television programming and a symbolic attack on the primacy of writing in our industry. We implore ATAS to restore these awards to their rightful place in the live telecast of the 2009 Emmy Awards.
