Spike Lee will film a follow-up to his Emmy-winning Katrina documentary "When the Levees Broke," HBO said Thursday

Production begins Friday in New Orleans, with the film debuting this summer. Lee will produce and direct the as-yet untitled project; Sam Pollard will edit (and produce).

The film is timed to the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina this August.

"If God is willing and the creek don't rise, we will reach the same level of heartfelt stories -- human stories told by the great people of the Gulf states," Lee said.

The sequel will re-interview some of the survivors who appeared in "Levees." Word of the new project first surfaced last June.
