Donald Sutherland and Ellen Burstyn have joined the cast of “The Calling,” a thriller that began production last week, according to an individual with knowledge of the project.

Gil Bellows, who recently wrapped the JFK drama "Parkland," also joins stars Topher Grace and Susan Sarandon in the film, which follows a Canadian detective (Sarandon) tracking down a serial killer with the help of a police officer (Grace).

Jason Stone is directing an adaptation of Inger Ash Wolfe’s novel by Scott Abramovitch, who is also producing along with Randy Manis, Lonny Dubrofsky of Breaking Ball Films and Nicholas Tabarrok of Darius Films. Jonathan Bronfman of JoBro Productions and Christine Vachon of Killer films are executive producing.

Jason Clarke and Omar Sy will star in “Candy Store,” an action thriller which “Traffic” scribe Stephen Gaghan co-wrote and will direct, Good Universe and Lionsgate announced on Thursday.

Gaghan’s tale weaves together several different storylines all set in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Clarke, who just starred in “Zero Dark Thirty,” will play a former secret agent who realizes a criminal syndicate he once battled has set up shop in his neighborhood. Clarke’s character partners with a local cop to investigate.

Sy, who starred in French sensation “The Intouchables,” will play a pimp involved in an intricate plot to harm Manhattan.

Tim Burton has signed on to direct “Big Eyes,” a long-gestating film project that The Weinstein Company is on the verge of acquiring, according to two individuals with knowledge of the director’s plans. Two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz will star as Walter Keane, one-half of a husband-wife duo that became famous for painting children with massive eyes.

Deadline Hollywood, which broke the news of Burton’s attachment, also reported that Amy Adams will star as Walter’s wife Margaret. It remains unclear whether Adams has agreed to take the part, according to those individuals.

Matthew Broderick is officially a single man -- or at least he'll play one in his latest project.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" star Broderick has been cast to star in CBS's upcoming pilot from Tad Quill ("Scrubs," "Samantha Who?").

Broderick will play Jack, a recently widowed father who raises his 12-year-old son while jumping back into the dating pool.
