In the NBC section of the Governor’s Ball – tables in “the 100s” in the front of the room – Jimmy Fallon gave former “Weekend Update” co-anchor Tina Fey a bear hug when he arrived. Nearby, NBC Universal President/CEO Jeff Zucker said he would have the ratings from the telecast at 4 a.m. Pacific Time Monday morning, but “don’t call me.”

Over at one of the multiple solid ice Grey Goose bars, former NBC Co-Chair Ben Silverman said that if he had oversight of the show, he wouldn’t have changed a thing. “Jimmy really brought it.”

The Emmys Telecast: What It Really Needed Was Jack Kevorkian

August, 29, 2010 8:54 pm | Comments On #2010, Awards, emmy awards, Emmys, Jimmy Fallon, telecast

If only audience member Jack Kevorkian had stepped in to put it out of the 62nd annual Emmy Awards misery.

Of course, the Emmys are not the Grammys, with hours of extravagant performances, or the Oscars, with nominated songs and big dance numbers and armies of writers, or the Tonys, with nominees taking the stage to show you why they’re there.

Jimmy FallonThe Emmys are more of a news story than a television show, with more than two dozen awards crammed into three commercial-laden hours, and not much room for anything else.

The notable exception, in this case? An extravagant opening number in which Jimmy Fallon managed the peppiest version of “Born to Run” in history, while the likes of...

10 Things You Didn't See on TV

August, 29, 2010 8:40 pm | Comments On #Emmys, Television

3:33 p.m.
Inside the Nokia, guests are shocked to learn that the producers have ordered the bars closed at 4 p.m. -- an hour before going to air. Nothing will be open until 5:30, and then only non-alcoholic drinks for the rest of the night. Looks like people will be actually watching the show.

3:40 p.m.
"The Office's" Paul Lieberstein is asked (unknowingly) to take pics for a guest. "Lost's" Henry Ian Cusick, strolls alone with a vitamin water while doodling on his iPhone.

4:34 p.m.
Longtime Oscar telecast joke writer Bruce Vilanch is amongst the rush to the facilities before the show -- he mocks the eco-urinals at the Nokia. Ushers are pleading with everyone go inside.

4:47 p.m.
NBC's own live red-carpet coverage is...

Try Not to Cringe: The 6 Emmy Moments That Fell Flat

August, 29, 2010 8:37 pm | Comments On #Awards, Betty White, cringe worthy, emmy awards, gay jokes, John Krasinski, news

Whether it was Betty White’s sex drive, announcers with corny one-liners, or gay jokes that wouldn’t make an eighth grader chuckle, TheWrap calls out the worst moments of TV’s big night.

1) All Those Gay Jokes: Neil Patrick Harris, Lauren Graham and even the reliably funny Stewie from “Family Guy” all saw their gay jokes land with a thud. Perhaps that’s because the punch lines mostly consisted of calling another, presumably heterosexual actor, gay (insert Jimmy Fallon, Matthew Perry).

2) Kim Kardashian, Singer: The reality show performer/sex tape star showed off her crooning chops and they were, well, lacking. Teaming up for a duet...

Emmy Analysis: A Few Newcomers Crash the Party

August, 29, 2010 8:16 pm | Comments On #Awards, emmy awards, Emmys, Mad Men, Modern Family, Temple Grandin

It was two steps forward, one step back.

At the Emmys, that’s about the best you can hope for.

The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards showed off a few fresh faces, and a show known for its stultifying winning streaks received a couple of shots of adrenaline courtesy of newcomers like “Modern Family” and “Glee.”

In fact, the show started out with four consecutive wins for those freshman series, two each, followed by first-time winner Jim Parsons for “The Big Bang Theory.”

Jane LynchIt wasn’t until 45 minutes into the show that a past winner picked up a statuette – and that was Edie Falco, who’d won three times in the drama category...

'Mad Men' 3-Peats as Emmy's Best Drama; 'Modern Family' Top Comedy

August, 29, 2010 4:43 pm | Comments On #Awards, Christina Hendricks, Emmys, Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family, Nokia Theatre, Ricky Gervais, Ryan Murphy, Steve Carrell, Television

"Mad Men" just landed another big account with the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences: A third best-drama Emmy.

On the comedy side, "Modern Family" beat out Fox juggernaut "Glee" and a host of veteran shows -- including reigning champ "30 Rock" -- to win in its freshman year. The ABC single-camera comedy also took supporting actor and writing hardware.
