Ad Buyers Pick Fall's Winners & Losers

Clearly it's not easy to program a network. And buyers, deep down, know that.
They also know that it's hard to tell which new show is going to be a hit from some clips at an upfront presentation.
Some, like ABC's "Cavemen" from a few years ago, are no-brainers. But others, like "FlashForward," can fool everyone. There was not a buyer who walked out of the ABC presentation last year not thinking it would be the hit of this season.

May, 20, 2010 6:36 pm | Comments On #Television, UpfrontsIf the Big Four broadcast networks don't get "greedy," this year's primetime upfront television negotiations for commercial time on next season's shows could be completed in a couple of weeks instead of the couple of months it took last year, media buyers are telling TheWrap.
And what will it take to do get one of the major media buying agencies to complete that first major primetime advertising deal?
Buyers say a cumulative price for a primetime package that costs between 6-8 percent more than last year.
"Everyone agrees that the television marketplace is strong and advertisers have a lot of money to spend and they want to spend it this year in the upfront," said one media buyer, echoing the thoughts of many.
But one thing buyers will not go for is if the networks insist on double-digit price increases -- which several of them ...

Ricky Martin's appearance at Univision's annual upfront presentation today was supposed to be top-secret, but word of his surprise performance got out on Twitter a few hours before the show.
The news leaked from Martin himself, who sent out a Tweet saying, "Im in New York for the Univision Upfront" at about noon. The network's presentation began three hours later.
In a possible nod to the Twitter snafu, the Univision presentation kicked off with Martin walking on stage, holding his BlackBerry, and sending out a Tweet: "Viva el español" ("Long live Spanish"). Martin's Twitter message was projected on a large screen behind him.
Martin will be putting down his BlackBerry and picking up a...

In addition to adding three new dramas and two new sitcoms to its 2010-11 schedule, CBS dropped seven of its lower-rated or declining shows and moved four of its highest-rated shows to different nights in order to revitalize the schedule and ensure that it will be competitive in the years to come.
