ABC's "Modern Family" is saying "Cheers" to a sitcom legend.

Shelly Long, best known for playing Diane Chambers on the classic NBC half-hour "Cheers," has signed on to play the ex-wife of Ed O'Neill's Jay. O'Neill, of course, is himself a former star of a legendary 1980s sitcom ("Married...with Children").

"Modern Family" is executive produced by Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, both of whom got their start working on "Frasier" and "Wings," both of which were part of the "Cheers" universe (only "Frasier" was technically a spinoff).
