John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer continued his serial murder spree on Showtime’s viewership records Sunday, with the season-four finale of “Dexter” ranking as the pay cable network’s most watched original-series episode ever.

“Dexter” averaged 2.575 million viewers at 9 p.m., a figure 71 percent higher than the show’s season-three finale.

It was also the biggest Showtime audience since an October, 1999 boxing match featuring Mike Tyson.

It was the second weekend in a row that “Dexter” broke the channel’s original-series viewing mark. Lithgow's take as a serial-killing rival to star Michael C. Hall has not only driven ratings, but also early Emmy buzz for the former "3rd Rock From the Sun" star.

And just like last week, lead-out “Californication” benefitted from "Dexter's" heat, with Sunday’s season finale garnering 1.055 million viewers at 10 p.m. -- up 72 percent over the season two finale.
