Mariah Carey: The "One Sweet Day" singer's name has been thrown around as a potential "Idol" replacement judge, and was reported to be on former "Idol" honcho Simon Cowell's short list for "The X Factor." She seems to know a thing or two about singing, so it just might work. Plus it doesn't hurt that judge Randy Jackson is Carey's manager.
Adam Lambert: There's been talk of the former "Idol" contestant slipping into a judge's chair for some time now. He no doubt knows the drill from the other side. But is he too nice?
Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie is also reportedly in the mix, but she shot down a chance to judge "The X Factor"'s second season, saying the timing isn't right.
Charlie Sheen: "Idol" executive producer Nigel Lythgoe has (jokingly?) said that he'd like to sign the "Anger Management" star to the show, and Sheen said he'd be interested. Would Paula Abdul-style nuttiness ensue?
Katy Perry: The "Part of Me" singer has said that an "American Idol" judging gig would take up too much of her time.
Axl Rose: He knows music, but he'd probably show up two hours late for each show and eventually fire the rest of the judges and replace them with less talented fill-ins as he did with his band.
Mary J. Blige: The "What's the 411?" singer is also being considered for the judges' panel.
Miley Cyrus: The former "Hannah Montana" star has performed on "Idol" before and is said to be among the contenders. But word has it that she can't be tamed.
Will.i.am: Like his bandmate Fergie, the Black Eyed Peas frontman has also been mentioned. He could add some "Boom Boom Pow" to the mix.
Selena Gomez: Sure, the "Wizards of Waverly Place" star would add youth and a big name to "Idol." But could the sweet-as-pie former Disney kid muster up the nerve to actually criticize anyone?
Sean "Diddy" Combs: The man gave the world Danity Kane. Is there any doubt he's qualified to judge the music stars of tomorrow?
Rihanna: Ms. "Umbrella" performed on last season's "American Idol" finale -- which turned out to be its lowest-rated finale ever. Perhaps she should steer clear.
Madonna: The Material Girl would excel at giving pointers on singing -- and faking a British accent, if need be.
The "Fly Away" singer is said to be in talks for an "Idol" gig. Is he gonna go that way?
Jerry Lewis: Nigel Lythgoe has also expressed interest in the 86-year-old funnyman. Could be fun, except episodes would last 72 hours, and every contestant would have to sing "You'll Never Walk Alone."
Phil Spector: His musical knowledge would make him a killer addition, but he'd have to judge via Skype from his jail cell.
