Twitter Rolls Out Redesign of Profile Pages, iPad App to Push Photo Sharing

CEO Dick Costello announces the microblogging site is getting a facelift during an appearance on "Today"

Twitter is getting a facelift, with a bold new look that emphasizes photo sharing.

During an appearance Tuesday on NBC's "Today," Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said the popular microblogging site is sprucing up its profile pages and iPad, iPhone and Android apps.

The overhaul gives more prominence to photo streaming and allows users to access Twitpics via apps. The emphasis on photo sharing is perhaps in response to challenges from social networking sites like Instagram that command large user bases by allowing members to easily share snapshots.

With the new Twitter app, users can now access full screen photos and photos.

"Photo streams now appear below anyone’s most recent Tweets on iPhone, Android and iPad," Twitter wrote on its blog. "Swipe through the stream to see the photos other users have shared or tap any thumbnail to view their photos in fullscreen."

Also as part of the redesign, profile pages will be decorated with a larger header image, and Twitter avatars will be better displayed. The look is reminiscent of Facebook's Timeline overhaul, which also features vista-like profile shots.

The new profile pages can now be accessed once users opt in, Twitter said.
