Universal Names New Director for ‘Pitch Perfect 3’

Elizabeth Banks cited family obligations when she dropped out as franchise helmer earlier this year

Unviersal Pictures has entrusted another female director with the “Pitch Perfect” franchise after Elizabeth Banks dropped out in June.

Trish Sie (“Step Up: All In”) will take The Barden Bellas to a third film. The news was announced by Banks on Twitter The film will reunite alums Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Brittany Snow.

“It’s like Xmas, 4th of July & my bday all at once, only better!” Sie said in her own tweet.

“Pitch Perfect 2” boasts the highest-grossing movie musical opening of all time, and its follow-up will be produced by series fixture Paul Brooks of Gold Circle Entertainment. Banks will stay on to produce with husband Max Handelman.

“Pitch Perfect 2” has grossed more than $250 million worldwide — more than double the original’s $115 million gross.

Banks will next appear as the villain in the reboot of the “Power Rangers” franchise.
