Marvel Comics’ black Spider-Man is coming to the big screen via Sony.
From Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the filmmakers behind “The Lego Movie,” comes an animated “Spider-Man” movie featuring the comic book character Miles Morales, the studio has confirmed.
The announcement was made by SPA president Kristine Belson at a slate presentation on Wednesday morning at the Culver City, California studio.
“What inspired us the most is that anyone can where the mask. You can be any race creed or color,” said Lord and Miller via a pre-recorded video at the presentation.
The feature is being directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey and written by Phil Lord. Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, Phil Lord & Christopher Miller are executive producing; Christina Steinberg is producing.
Miles Morales was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli, with Bendis and Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso drawing inspiration from both U.S. President Barack Obama and American actor Donald Glover.
Miles Morales was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York City, the 13-year-old son of an African American father and a Puerto Rican mother. Axel Alonso has described Miles Morales as an intelligent nerd with an aptitude for science similar to his predecessor, Peter Parker.
Miles Morales made his debut in the fourth issue of the “Ultimate Fallout” limited series, which was released on August 3, 2011. He later starred in the relaunched “Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man” series, written by Bendis and drawn by Pichelli, in September 2011.
Heroic Hollywood first reported the news of Miles Morales being the focus of the untitled animated film.
‘Untitled Animated Spider-Man’ will hit theaters on Dec. 21, 2018.
