Venice Film Festival Lineup Includes Terry Gilliam, James Franco, Lindsay Lohan Offerings

Festival will open with "Gravity" and will also include movies from Errol Morris, David Gordon Green and Stephen Frears

The 2013 edition of the Venice Film Festival will kick off with Alfonso Cuaron‘s space thriller “Gravity” before powering through a host of new films from a diverse array of directors like Terry Gilliam, David Gordon Green, James Franco and Stephen Frears.

Gilliam hits the festival with “The Zero Theorem,” a math drama starring Christoph Waltz; Gordon Green will be on hand with the Southern thriller, “Joe,” which stars Nicolas Cage as an ex-con; Franco is offering up his adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s “Child of God”; and Frears is pooling his talents with Judi Dench on the fact-based drama “Philomena.” Jonathan Glazer’s alien-in-Scotland film, “Under the Skin,” which stars Scarlett Johannson, and Errol Morris’ “The Unknown Known: The Life And Times Of Donald Rumsfeld,” a look at the controversial former Secretary of Defense, joins the competition as well.

With the exception of Cuaron, those directors will be in the hunt for the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion. Venice’s out-of-competition offerings include “The Canyons,” director Paul Schrader’s collaboration with tabloid fixture Lindsay Lohan, and “The Armstrong Lie,” Oscar winner Alex Gibney’s examination of Lance Armstrong’s doping scandal.
