Venice Film Festival Unveils Lineup

71 world premieres will debut in Italy.

The Venice Film Festival on Thursday revealed its lineup of 71 world premieres, which include films from 25 different countries ranging from the U.S. to Egypt to India.

U.S. pictures shooting for a Golden Lion include Michael Moore’s documentary "Capitalism: A Love Story"; John Hillcoat’s "The Road," an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s novel with Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron; Werner Herzog’s "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" with Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes; Todd Solondz’s "Life During Wartime"; and Tom Ford’s "A Single Man," starring Colin Firth and Julianne Moore.

Pictures from the states debuting but not in competition include Steven Soderbergh’s "The Informant"; Grant Heslov’s satire "The Men Who Stare at Goats" with George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges; Joe Dante’s 3-D horror film "The Hole," and Oliver Stone’s "South of the Border," a documentary about Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"Everybody thought that the writers’ strike and the economic crisis had created a stall in American cinema; instead this year, like never before, we found such ample offerings coming from the U.S.; both from established directors," fest director Marco Mueller said at a press conference in Rome.
