Vera Farmiga Joins A&E’s ‘Psycho’ Prequel

"Up in the Air" star Vera Farmiga has signed on for "Bates Motel," A&E's prequel series to Alfred Hitchcock's "Psyco," which will focus on the formative years of the hospitality industry's most notorious killer.

Getty ImagesFarmiga will play Norma Louis Bates, the mother of young Norman Bates. Her character is described by A&E as "complicated, passionate and compelling," a "smart, multidimensional character who is always capable of surprising us."

Capable of surprising people? Sounds like a family trait in the Bates clan.

"Bates Motel" executive producer Carlton Cuse said that he was "delighted" that Farmiga has come aboard.

"She is a phenomenal talent who has demonstrated incredible range and intelligence in a number of landmark film roles, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her join our project," Cuse added.

Farmiga's most recent regular television stint was on the USA Network crime drama "Touching Evil" in 2004.
