In the spirit of its crowd-funded roots, the “Veronica Mars” movie will be released via video on demand worldwide on March 14, the same day it will hit movie theaters.
Creator Rob Thomas broke the news in a message to the movie’s backers on Kickstarter.
“To me, the most important goal was always to make sure that every backer would be able to see the movie as soon as possible,” Thomas wrote. “That’s what we promised when you jumped on board last spring, and today, I’m pleased to say that we’ve kept that promise.”

According to the announcement, Warner Bros. will make the movie available for rent and purchase from digital retailers such as Amazon and iTunes and through participating cable and satellite providers worldwide on March 14.
For Kickstarter contributors to the movie who gave $35 or more during the March 2013 fundraising campaign, the digital download will be free as part of the producers’ original agreement. Details on how to claim the free download will be furnished within the next couple weeks.
This latest digital offering follows after the movie’s special screenings for its backers sold out in mere hours last week, which prompted AMC to add additional showings.

The movie sequel to The CW and UPN TV series was funded back in March of last year with a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. It hit its $2 million goal on the same day that Thomas and star Kristen Bell launched the drive and ultimately raised $5.7 million.
“Veronica Mars” will make its world premiere next month at the SXSW Film Festival.
