VH1 Revives ‘Pop-Up Video’ — And Our Interest in VH1

The influential 1990s favorite will return with 60 episodes in the fall; “Behind the Music” and “Mob Wives” also return

Admit it: The "Pop Up Video" theme has been stuck in your head for 15 years.

It may be there for 15 more, now that VH1 has announced its long-overdue decision to revive the groundbreaking 1996-2002 franchise.

The series will be revamped for a run of 60 half-hour episodes and will debut this fall, the network confirms. Woody Thompson, one of the co-creators of "Pop Up Video," will return at the helm.

Much like what "Mystery Science Theater 3000" did for B-movies, "Pop Up Video" poked snarky fun at music videos everyone had seen a million times — but its popularity also owed to the clever and informative behind-the-scenes nuggets of gossip that appeared in the info bubbles.

When the show left the air in 2002, it only added to the general perception that the big music channels never showed videos anymore.

While that's never been true — both MTV and VH1 have always aired videos, just a lot less of them — the return of "Pop Up Video" could be a sign that the genre is back in vogue again.

In other news, VH1 is also recharging the venerable "Behind the Music" series with five new episodes this summer. Its seventh season will debut June 29 with a dramatic examination of Mary J. Blige.

But its not all nostalgia at VH1. The network also announced that it has renewed its reality series "Mob Wives" for 12 more episodes this fall.
