Vine Star Matthew Espinosa on His ‘Surreal’ Shift to Making Movies (Video)

Social media celebrity talks to TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell about his new film “Be Somebody”

Social media star Matthew Espinosa may be a big celebrity in cyberspace, but moving to the big screen with his new movie “Be Somebody” still caused quite a shock.

“The fact that I’m already 18 and I already have a movie coming out is such a surreal thing to be able to say,” Espinosa told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “The fact that it came here so early in my life is such an amazing thing. The fact that I was able to act in a feature-length film — like, what?! — it’s crazy to think about.”

In “Be Somebody,” the fledgling thespian plays Jordan Jaye, a pop star who wants to know what it’s like to live a normal life. He finds the perfect opportunity when he hides out in a small town after being chased by fan girls.

Although Espinosa rose to fame on social media, he said that making a movie has always been a dream. “[Social media] just started opening doors for me, and I really kind of want to just start going through those doors,” he said. “Ever since I was, like, 4 or 5 years old, I remember looking at TV screens and movie screens and being, like, ‘Wow … I’ve got to do this, this is me, this is my passion.’”

He also hopes audiences remember to always “take what you love and to just go for it no matter what anyone says.”

True to his word, Espinosa is going for it — he teased that he has multiple projects on the way.

“Every day it’s a new learning curve because you’re always keeping an open mind to knowing that you’re not the smartest person here,” Espinosa said. “There’s always someone in this town that you can learn from.”
