The 76-year-old actor, perhaps best known for playing Lando Calrissian, was joined by Storm Troopers, R2-D2, and Ewoks
Lando Calrissian, though never a Jedi, was nonetheless able to use the ultimate Force — Disney's brand synergy — on “Dancing with the Stars.”
At 76-years-old and sporting a history of hip ailments and surgeries, the actor isn't the most spry contestant we've seen on the show, and that's why the charm of nostalgia is so important to his chances to win. On the opening night of competition, he certainly tapped into the enduring love for “Star Wars” to enhance his act, aided by the fact that ABC now has the same parent company as Lucasfilm.
There were Stormtroopers, Ewoks, and even R2-D2 on hand to cheer on his performance, which also included a costume that vaguely recalled Lando's and a partner who sported Princess Leia hair buns. Oh, and the pair danced to a medley of “Star Wars” songs that included the tune playing at Mos Eisley cantina.
It didn't necessarily impress the judges all that much, but all that really matters is what the fans have to say; if they can overlook the fact that he more shuffled than actually danced, perhaps we'll be in store for more synergy, subtle advertising — new “Star Wars” movies coming soon!!! — and more Billy Dee.
