Watch First ‘Queen of Katwe’ Trailer: Lupita Nyong’o and the Joy of Chess (Video)

Fact-based film, also starring David Oyelowo, opens on Sept. 23

In the first trailer for Lupita Nyong’o and David Oyelowo‘s film, “Queen of Katwe,” a young girl finds her world changed when she becomes exposed to the game of chess.

A girl named Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga) sells corn on the streets of rural Uganda, but when she begins to play chess, she sets her sights on becoming an international chess champion.

“Can you do big things from such a small place?” she asks her mother, played by Nyong’o.

“In chess, the small one can become the big one,” someone tells Phiona when she first stars learning about the game.

Directed by Mira Nair from a screenplay by William Wheeler, the film is based on the book by Tim Crothers. Lydia Dean Pilcher and John Carls are producing, with Will Weiske and Troy Buder serving as executive producers.

The film, based on a true story, will be released in U.S. theaters on Sept. 23.
