It’s been nearly 17 years since Billy Zane let Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet go down with the ship in “Titanic,” but the actor is still playing shady characters. In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from “Mining for Ruby,” he cautions Antoinette Kalaj (“Don Jon”) against doing the right thing.
Director Zoe Quist’s (“Raw Cut”) picturesque Alaskan indie centers around a scientist named Ruby (Kalaj) who falls for a widower played by Daniel Ponickly (“Mona Lisa Smile.”) After uncovering a looming environmental disaster that promises to pit her against a shady industry — and potentially shutdown the town she’s grown to love — Ruby is confronted by Zane’s sketchy character, Professor Sam Goodwell.
“People need to know what’s in their water source!” says Kalaj. “We have to post our findings!”
“We’re scientists,” Zane responds. “We are cautious, skeptical and responsible — you are gambling with our reputations!”
Written by Ponickly, produced by Lock And Monkey Productions and distributed by Gravitas Ventures, the film also stars Mischa Barton (“The O.C.”) and Jonathan Bennett (“Mean Girls.”)
“Mining for Ruby” becomes available through VOD Friday, Aug. 1.
