Jockeying for position as the awards season approaches, The Weinstein Company has decided to push back the release date on "Killing Them Softly" from Oct. 19 to Nov. 30, a spokeswoman told TheWrap.
The crime drama, directed by Andrew Dominik and starring Brad Pitt, was set to go up against "Paranormal Activity 4" and "Alex Cross," starring Tyler Perry, on the original October date. It also would have opened just one week after Ben Affleck's "Argo," which drew rave reviews at both Telluride and Toronto film festivals.
Affleck's film, set to the Iranian hostage crisis, is already considered an awards frontrunner.
Instead, "Killing Them Softly" will compete with the Scott Walker thriller "The Frozen Ground," starring Nicholas Cage and John Cusack on Nov. 30.
The film will be the lone awards contender of that weekend and now falls in the heart of the awards calendar. In the preceding two weeks, Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina," Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" and David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" all open.
