Why Dr. Oz Doesn’t Drink Coffee in the Morning

Hint: It's not a good idea when you are elbows deep in a heart-transplant patient

Dr. Mehmet Oz — television star, Oprah protégé and the world's most famous heart surgeon — believes in having a strict morning routine.

Getty ImagesThe good doctor said at Business Insider's Ignition conference on Wednesday that he is a creature of habit. He wakes up at 6:30 a.m. every day and kicks off the early hours with six to seven minutes of yoga. That's enough time for a "quick sun salutation," Oz said.

One thing that is missing from his breakfast of Greek yogurt and fruit is any kind of caffeinated pick-me-up.

Oz said he shuns coffee for a very simple reason. "It makes you go to the bathroom." 

That may be fine when he's in the studio taping an episode of "The Dr. Oz Show," he said, but it's a big problem when he's elbows deep in a heart-transplant patient.

Of course, with his mile-a-minute patter and varied medical and media interests, one thing the good doctor doesn't seem to suffer from a lack of stimulants.
