Armus and Foster would write the project, which is based on the upcoming Danielle Paige book “Dorothy Must Die,” with Kring producing.

The book, due from HarperTeen early next year, delivers a contemporary spin on the L. Frank Baum classic. Set in modern times, the book envisions a scenario where Dorothy actually never returned to Kansas, but instead now rules over a fascist version of Oz, where she keeps things on tight lockdown with the help of the Tin Man, the Scarecrow and the Cowardly Lion.

However, a challenger appears in the form of another woman from Kansas who arrives in Oz and leads a resistance movement to topple Dorothy’s regime.

A digital prequel to “Dorothy Must Die,” dubbed “No Place Like Oz,” is currently available.
