Writers Guild Awards Set for Feb. 1, 2014

Concurrent ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles and New York

The 2014 Writers Guild Awards will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York, the Writers Guild of America, West and Writers Guild of America, East announced Thursday.

The Writers Guild of America, West ceremony will once again be held at the JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live, and the WGA East ceremony will be held at the Edison Ballroom in New York.

The two linked guilds hold separate, simultaneous ceremonies but announce the same awards. This has caused significant problems the last two years, as a number of categories — including the film screenwriting awards — have been announced in New York well before they were in Los Angeles. Nominees could check their cellphones and learn their fates long before their categories were presented.

The WGA is the last of the major Hollywood guilds to announce its 2014 awards-show date. With the Screen Actors Guild holding its ceremony on Jan. 18, the Producers Guild on Jan. 19 and the Directors Guild on Jan. 25, a full month will elapse between the last of the major guild shows and the Oscars on March 2.

The Golden Globes have yet to announce a 2014 date, but the guild scheduling seems to leave the Hollywood Foreign Press Association little choice but to hold its ceremony on Jan. 12, four days before Oscar nominations.

The Writers Guild Awards honor outstanding writing in film, television, new media, videogames, news, radio and promotional writing, and graphic animation.
