‘Carmen Sandiego’ Trailer: Netflix Gives Gina Rodriguez-Voiced Character Her Own Origin Story (Video)

The “Jane the Virgin” star will also play a live-action version of the popular video game character

Even Carmen Sandiego is getting her own origin story.

Netflix released the first trailer for its animated series “Carmen Sandiego” on Friday, and it features a look into just how Ms. Sandiego — voiced by “Jane the Virgin” lead Gina Rodriguez — ended up as a globetrotting criminal. “Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard lends his voice for the series as well.

The official logline for the series is: A master thief who uses her skills for good, Carmen Sandiego travels the world foiling V.I.L.E.’s evil plans — with help from her savvy sidekicks. The 20-episode season will premiere on Jan. 18, which will be followed by a live-action version of “Carmen Sandiego” on Netflix that also stars Rodriguez.

“Carmen Sandiego” first began in 1985 as a series of educational computer games titled “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” before rising in popularity in the 1990s with a pair of PBS game shows and an animated series.

The film adaptation of the famed educational series is expected to hit in 2019. Rodriguez is producing the feature-length film through her I Can And I Will banner alongside Kevin Misher and Caroline Fraser, with Andy Berman as executive producer.
