(Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Season 6 premiere of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”)
Jake Peralta finally got the “Die Hard” fantasy he never knew he always wanted during his honeymoon in Mexico on the Season 6 premiere of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” (now on NBC), thanks to an elaborate roleplaying scenario set up by his new bride, Amy Santiago.
Amy (Melissa Fumero) made all of Jake’s (Andy Samberg) wildest dreams come true when she dressed up as Holly Gennaro aka Bonnie Bedelia’s character in Jake’s favorite movie of all time. And when we say dressed up (for “sexy reasons,” as Jake puts it) we mean the spitting image of John McClane’s wife, with a wig, outfit, jewelry, the whole nine yards.

During a press day last month, TheWrap asked “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” creator Dan Goor and stars Samberg and Fumero about how the scene came together.
“That was one of those times where something is on the page and you’re like, ‘That seems really funny.’ And then seeing Melissa in that outfit was so much better than I ever could have imagined,” Goor told TheWrap. “She looked like — it was so perfect. And that’s like both her and costume and hair — it was so well done, I thought.”
Fumero told TheWrap she thought she actually gave Goor the idea — but turns out she did not.
“I met Bonnie, I actually worked with her over the break and so it was weird that they wrote that into the first episode,” Fumero said. “I feel like I maybe planted a seed when I told Dan, I’m like, ‘I’m shooting with Bonnie Bedelia!’ And then he forgot that I did and I was like, ‘Did you write this because I told you about Bonnie?’ And he said, ‘Oh, I forgot you worked with Bonnie.’”
OK, so maybe it wasn’t Fumero’s doing, but she still thought it was “very fun.”
“Anytime we get to do a ‘Die Hard’ joke, it’s great,” she said.
Now we had to ask Goor why they decided to ruin Jake’s fantasy with a poorly-timed interruption by Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) — who was awkwardly involved in Jake and Amy’s honeymoon because he came to the same resort to drown his sorrows over missing out on the police commissioner job.
“Almost ruined!” Samberg corrected TheWrap.
“Can you ruin a ‘Die Hard’ fantasy for Jake?” Goor mused.
Don’t worry, Jake found a way to turn it around and throwback to a joke from the series premiere about proper work attire, all at the same time.
“I love the line that we got in there where Jake brings it back to the pilot as he’s trying to kick him out of the room, ‘Thank you for teaching me the importance of a tie in the workplace,’” Samberg said.
Of course then the couple ended up having to tie Holt up spread-eagle on their bed to talk some sense into him about returning to work and “giving a hoot” after losing his promotion. But they eventually got back to their fantasy by the episode’s end, with Jake dressing up as Melvil Dewey — the inventor of the Dewey Decimal system — for Amy, because that’s love.
