Hilary Swank is about to play an astronaut in “Away,” Netflix’s upcoming 10-episode space drama, the streamer announced Wednesday.

The two-time Academy Award winner (“Boys Don’t Cry,” “Million Dollar Baby”) will play Emma Green, an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous mission to Mars. Loosely inspired by a 2014 Esquire article by Chris Jones, the series is about hope, humanity and how we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things, per Netflix.

Swank will also executive produce along with showrunner and writer Jessica Goldberg (“The Path”), writer Jason Katims (“Friday Night Lights,” “Parenthood”), Matt Reeves (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Cloverfield”), Ed Zwick (“Nashville,” “Jack Reacher: Never Go Back”), and writer Andrew Hinderaker. Adam Kassan and Michelle Lee will also executive produce certain episodes.

“Away” is produced by Universal Television in association with True Jack Productions and 6th & Idaho.

In February, Netflix acquired the North American rights to Swank’s feature film “I Am Mother” at the Sundance Film Festival. The sci-fi thriller about a teenage girl who is raised by a robot is set to release on the streaming service in June.

No release date has been announced yet for “Away.”
