Amazon’s Fire TV devices are now used by 34 million people on a monthly basis, the e-commerce giant announced Tuesday at the Pay TV Show. That’s a growth of about 4 million users from back in January, when the company announced its devices were being used by 30 million people a month.

Meanwhile, streaming hardware rival Roku announced 29 million active users this month during its earnings report, up from 27 million in January. The updated numbers increase Amazon’s lead on Roku, which had dominated the streaming hardware industry prior to 2019.

Fire TV GM and global head of marketing, growth and engagement Jen Prenner made the announcement during a panel at the Pay TV Show titled “The Battle for Your Living Room: Sticks, Boxes, and Smart TV Platforms.” Prenner also said that Fire TV had grown to become the most popular streaming media player platform in the U.S., U.K., Germany, India and Japan, thanks to a strong period of growth in sales.

Amazon’s lead over Roku comes in part from its continued focus on international growth. Fire TV devices ship worldwide to over 40 countries, where the device is used to stream Prime Video content. Roku, on the other hand, ships to around 24 countries, including parts of Latin America, Canada, the U.K. and France.
