‘His Dark Materials’: HBO Drops First Teaser for Adaptation of Philip Pullman’s Fantasy Novel Trilogy (Video)

Series will air on both BBC and HBO

HBO released the first teaser for “His Dark Materials,” its long-in-the-works adaptation of Philip Pullman’s acclaimed fantasy trilogy of the same name.

The series, which already has a two-season order, stars Dafne Keen, Ruth Wilson, Lin-Manuel Miranda and James McAvoy.

Per HBO, the first season follows Lyra (Daphne Keen), a seemingly ordinary but brave young woman from another world. Her search for a kidnapped friend uncovers a sinister plot involving stolen children, and becomes a quest to understand a mysterious phenomenon called Dust. As she journeys through the worlds, including our own, Lyra meets Will, a determined and courageous boy. Together, they encounter extraordinary beings and dangerous secrets, with the fate of both the living – and the dead – in their hands.

Produced by Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema, “His Dark Materials” will air on The BBC in the U.K. and HBO in the U.S. HBO is also distributing the series outside the U.K.

No premiere date has been set.

“His Dark Materials” consists of three novels, “Northern Lights” (published as “The Golden Compass” in North America), “The Subtle Knife” and “The Amber Spyglass” and follows protagonist Lyra navigating a world where science, theology and magic are entwined. “The Golden Compass” was adapted into a movie in 2006 starring Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman.

The series will be executive produced by Pullman, Jane Tranter and Julie Gardner for Bad Wolf, Toby Emmerich and Carolyn Blackwood for New Line Cinema, Bethan Jones for BBC One and Deborah Forte for Scholastic, which publishes the books.
