As “Game of Thrones” ends its eight-year run Sunday, actress Emilia Clarke (aka Daenerys Targaryen) thanked the show’s “magical fans” for their support, adding earnestly, “Without you there is no us.”

“Finding the words to write this post has left me overwhelmed with how much I want to say but how small words feel in comparison to what this show and Dany have meant to me. The mother of dragons chapter has taken up the whole of my adult life,” Clarke wrote in an Instagram post Sunday.

“To you, dear kind magical fans, I owe you so much thanks, for your steady gaze at what we’ve made and what I’ve done with a character that was already in the hearts of many before I slipped on the platinum wig of dreams. Without you there is no us.”

She concluded: “And now our watch has ended.”

Clarke attached a photo with a large chunk of the show’s final season.

Since the first season of  “Game of Thrones” when Daenerys was sold off to the Dothraki horse lord Khal Drogo, Clarke’s character has transformed. Though the character originally made her name as a freer of slaves on the continent of Essos, she has taken an increasingly dark turn this final season, culminating in her decision in the show’s penultimate episode to use her last remaining dragon to set King’s Landing ablaze. The episode saw (what appeared to be) the final destruction of House Lannister when both Jamie and Cersei were crushed by debris as they attempted to flee the Red Keep.

The final episode of “Game of Thrones” airs Sunday evening on HBO at 9 p.m.
