Update: A spokeswoman for Instagram contacted TheWrap at 6:10 p.m. Pacific time and said the issue had been fixed. “Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble accessing their Instagram accounts. We are now fully recovered and apologize for the inconvenience,” the spokeswoman said.
If you’re unable to check out Instagram Stories and posts, you’re not the only one. The Facebook-owned popular pictures and messaging app was hit by an outage on Thursday afternoon.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing their Instagram accounts. We’re working quickly to fix the issue,” an Instagram rep told TheWrap when asked for details on the outage and how long it’s expected to last.
DownDetector.com, a site dedicated to tracking major outages, spiked to more than 50,000 reported issues with the app between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Pacific time. Most issues were reported from the West and East Coast and Western Europe.
Users that attempted to upload new posts or Stories were greeted with an error message reading “upload failed. Try again.” If they looked to refresh their feed, they were hit with a “couldn’t refresh feed” banner notification. And users that desperately rushed to Instagram’s desktop site were also out of luck, with a message saying the company was “working on it.”
As usual when Instagram or another major platform goes offline, users quickly rushed to Twitter to complain and joke about it.

This wasn’t the first time Instagram has went down this year; back in March, the app experienced a major outage at the same time Facebook and WhatsApp also went offline.
Today’s outage comes just hours after Sony’s PlayStation Network went down for many users across the country. After being down for three hours, it appears the issue was resolved for most users, although the company did not provide an update as of Thursday afternoon.
