McKenna Grace, the 12-year-old actress and star of “Annabelle Comes Home,” is set to star in and produce an adaptation of the novel “Rabbit Cake” for Amazon Studios, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Grace will produce “Rabbit Cake” along with Alix Madigan’s Mad Dog Films, making the tween star one of the youngest ever producers on a studio feature film
Susan Johnson, who directed “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” will direct and produce the film based on the 2017 debut novel by Annie Hartnett, as well as a screenplay that landed on the Black List by Allie Hagan.
“Rabbit Cake” is described as a dark comedy about a young girl trying to use humor and facts to find her place in the world after her mother suddenly passes away. It’s the story of Elvis Babbitt, who has a head for the facts. She knows science proves yellow is the happiest color, she knows a healthy male giraffe weighs about 3,000 pounds, and she knows she should plan to grieve her mother, who has recently drowned while sleepwalking, for exactly eighteen months. As Elvis investigates the strange circumstances of her mother’s death, she finds comfort, if not answers in the people and animals of Freedom, Alabama.
Grace recently starred in “Captain Marvel,” “The Haunting of Hill House” and had a breakout role in “Gifted” and “I, Tonya.” She also starred in the Sundance drama “Troop Zero,” which was also picked up by Amazon Studios. She was recently announced to star in Columbia’s new “Ghostbusters” film to be directed by Jason Reitman.
