Oren Aviv to Step Down From STX Entertainment Motion Picture Group

Executive was tasked with overseeing “Uglydolls” animated film

Oren Aviv, an executive within STX Entertainment’s motion picture group and previously its president and chief content officer, is stepping down from the company.

Aviv, who is an executive producer on films including “Bad Moms,” “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Molly’s Game” and is a producer and story writer on the original “National Treasure” film, is negotiating his exit and is expected to transition to a consultant role within the company.

Aviv was tasked with overseeing STX’s “Uglydolls,” an animated film based on a series of toy dolls that cost roughly $95 million between production and marketing spend and brand tie-ins. But it brought in only $26.4 million worldwide at the box office.

“Oren is transitioning from his full-time duties at STX and I’m happy to say that he will remain on as a strategic consultant for us as we begin our push into the next phase of the UglyDolls franchise with our animated series at Hulu,”  Robert Simonds, chairman and CEO of STX, said in a statement. “We thank Oren for his many contributions to STX since the company’s inception and look forward to his continued advice and counsel in this new capacity. We wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors, and I personally want to thank him for his many years of friendship and support.”

STX had hoped “Uglydolls” might become a a franchise. The film featured the voice and musical talents of artists like Pitbull, Kelly Clarkson, Ice-T, Blake Shelton, Bebe Rexha, Charlie XCX and more.

Before joining STX, Aviv was a president of marketing and chief creative officer with Disney. He also had a stint as president of marketing and CMO at 20th Century Fox. Aviv joined STX in 2014.

STX COO Thomas McGrath exited the company back in May and also transitioned into an advising role. Chief brand officer Patti Rockenwagner exited the company in March.

Variety first reported the news of Aviv’s exit.
