Netflix says “Stranger Things 3” has been viewed by more than 40 million household accounts since its July 4 premiere, a new record for the streaming service.

“.@Stranger_Things 3 is breaking Netflix records!” the official Netflix account tweeted Monday. “40.7 million household accounts have been watching the show since its July 4 global launch — more than any other film or series in its first four days. And 18.2 million have already finished the entire season.”

Fans have been waiting a long time for the eight-episode third installment of the Duffer Brothers-created sci-fi series, as Season 2 launched Oct. 27, 2017.

Soon after “Stranger Things 2” debuted, Nielsen reported 15.8 million people watched the Season 2 premiere episode over its opening weekend.

Of that overall Live + 3 Day (of sorts) audience, nearly 11 million members come from the all-important adults 18-49 demographic, according to the ratings currency company. Additionally, 361,000 people watched all nine of “Stranger Things 2’s” hour-long episodes on the day it launched.

Netflix is known for its secrecy surrounding viewership data, but for reference, the streaming said last December that its Sandra Bullock-led film “Bird Box” was viewed by more than 45 million different accounts during its first 7 days on the platform. And in January, Netflix tweeted that its original series “You” and “Sex Education” were on track to be viewed by more than 40 million member households by the end of the shows’ first four weeks on the service.

So “Stranger Things 3” is clearly a hit in comparison to the projects Netflix are already calling hits — according to Netflix.
