Conan O’Brien and Team Coco are back for a fifth year at San Diego Comic-Con, and on the first night they brought a hilarious new cold open that doubles as the talk show host’s superhero origin story. Watch it above.
And while the animation — done by STATE Design — is impressive, Conan’s heroics are not.
The plot parallels that of Spider-Man’s in last year’s Oscar-winning hit “Into the Spider-Verse.” But instead of being bitten by a radioactive spider, Conan gains his abilities from a radioactive party clown at his quinceanera (a coming-of-age celebration for teen girls, which Conan is neither).
That’s just one of the many parodies in the clip. There’s a play on the famous line “with great power comes great responsibility,” Spider-Man’s upside-down kiss, and more.
Instead of using his abilities — which included swinging from building to building with his signature red coif — for good, Conan opts for cheap laughs and light celebrity chat. Longtime sidekick Andy Richter mirrors the fictional Kingpin Wilson Fisk, and there’s also a cameo from Jeff Goldblum.
But perhaps the coolest, most-geek out moment comes at the end, when many classic comic book logos are reimagined.
