President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign announced Monday it “will no longer credential representatives of Bloomberg News for rallies or other campaign events.”
The decision came after Bloomberg News founder and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg joined the presidential race as a candidate for the Democratic nomination. Shortly thereafter, Bloomberg News suspended its editorial board and announced that its news staff would not investigate Bloomberg, his family, his foundation or his Democratic rivals during the campaign.
“The decision by Bloomberg News to formalize preferential reporting policies is troubling and wrong,” campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement, adding that staffers decided to ban reporters from the outlet because “they have declared their bias openly.”
“We will determine whether to engage with individual reporters or answer inquiries from Bloomberg News on a case-by-case basis,” he continued. “This will remain the policy of the Trump campaign until Bloomberg News publicly rescinds its decision.”
In a statement provided to TheWrap, Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait responded, “The accusation of bias couldn’t be further from the truth. We have covered Donald Trump fairly and in an unbiased way since he became a candidate in 2015 and will continue to do so despite the restrictions imposed by the Trump campaign.”
