The New York Daily News is shuttering its office location at 4 New York Plaza, its parent company Tribune Publishing said on Wednesday. The famous tabloid paper will continue to print.
The move comes as other media giants are weighing when and how to get employees back into offices after the coronavirus sent virtually everyone to work from home.
A spokesperson for Tribune, which owns the Daily News, explained, “Out of an abundance of caution we do not anticipate having employees that can work remotely coming back into the office for the remainder of the year and into 2021. With no clear path forward in terms of returning to work, and as the company evaluates its real estate needs in light of health and economic conditions brought about by the pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to permanently close the office.”
A spokesperson told the New York Times, “As we progress through the pandemic and as needs change, we will reconsider our need for physical offices. We will keep employees informed of decisions as they are made.”
Pamela Wood, a reporter for the Tribune-owned Baltimore Sun, tweeted a screenshot of an email Wednesday that confirmed other Tribune offices will be closing, too, including that of the Capital Gazette: “Now we’re told that the company is permanently shutting down our @capgaznews office in Annapolis and our @CCTNews office in Westminster.”
The Orlando Sentinel also confirmed that journalists would not be returning to the downtown campus.
