ABC’s “World News With Diane Sawyer” scored a ratings victory over May sweeps, taking first place in the key 25-54 news demo over its NBC and CBS counterparts. The occasion marked the first time that the network has scored a demo victory for May sweeps in seven years.

For the May sweeps period, ABC scored top honors among the 25-54 crowd with a 1.7 rating/7 share, edging out the 1.6/7 that second-place “NBC Nightly News” scored and handily beating the 1.3/5 received by “CBS Evening News.”

In total viewers, NBC took first place, averaging 8.4 million. ABC came in second with 7.7 million, while CBS drew third with 6.5 million.

In addition to marking a seven-year milestone for the network, the May sweeps win was a big occasion for Sawyer, who became the first solo female anchor on an evening news broadcast to win sweeps in the demo.
