Al Pacino earned an Oscar nomination playing the cutthroat salesman Ricky Roma in the film version of "Glengarry Glen Ross."
Plans are in the works for Pacino to take the play by David Mamet to Broadway, only this time instead of playing the shark-like Roma, he will take the part of Shelly Levene, according to a report in The New York Times.
A spokesman for Pacino's agency, ICM, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Levene, played by Jack Lemmon in the 1992 film, is the diametric opposite of the brimming-with-confidence Roma — he's desperate and quite a few steps off his game. Pacino, who has specialized in bloviating in many of his recent performances, will have to turn down the amplification substantially.
Pacino was most recently on Broadway in 2010's "The Merchant of Venice," earning a Tony nomination for his portrayal of Shylock. The Times reports that this revival of "Glengarry" will be directed by Daniel Sullivan, who also directed Pacino in the Shakespeare play.
"Glengarry" first appeared on stage in 1984 and was revived in 2005 with Liev Schreiber and Alan Alda playing Roma and Levene respectively.
Pacino is currently filming the gangster comedy "Stand Up Guys" opposite Christopher Walken and will provide voice work for "Despicable Me 2."
