Actress recently had procedure to reduce chances of developing cancer, attended LA show with kids Zahara and Shiloh

A beaming Angelina Jolie made her first public appearance since revealing she had preventative surgery to combat cancer, for the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards at The Forum in Inglewood, Ca.

With daughters Zahara and Shiloh in tow, Jolie looked radiant in an embellished black tank, nodding to the L.A. heat, while people-watching in a crowd that included Liam Hemsworth, Emma Stone, Kevin James and Nick Jonas.

Last week, the “Unbroken” director and wife of Brad Pitt announced she had removed her ovaries and fallopian tubes after doctors detected early signs of cancer.

“Two years ago I wrote about my choice to have a preventive double mastectomy. A simple blood test had revealed that I carried a mutation in the BRCA1 gene. It gave me an estimated 87 percent risk of breast cancer and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer. I lost my mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer,” Jolie wrote in an op-ed in the New York Times.

“I promised to follow up with any information that could be useful, including about my next preventive surgery, the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes,” the 39-year-old actress said.

The procedure had been pre-planned, she explained, and while it is less complex than her previous mastectomy, the “effects are more severe” because it “puts a woman into forced menopause,” according to the op-ed.

She immediately called Pitt, who was by her side within hours, and the couple found clarity together. “You know what you live for and what matters. It is polarizing, and it is peaceful,” she said.

The “Unbroken” director went to see the surgeon who treated her mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of ovarian cancer at age 56 in 2007, for additional tests.
