Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for “Annihilation,” in which it becomes more clear why Natalie Portman is a part of a team that needs to explore an unknown environmental disaster zone.
In the trailer, we see Lena the Biologist (Portman) interact with her husband, played by Oscar Isaac, who goes on an expedition and never returns. Lena is then summoned by the Psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to go on a mission into Area X.
“We sent in drones and people, but nothing comes back,” the Psychologist tells Lena.

Inside the zone, they discover that the boundaries keep expanding and different species crossbreed with each other, which quickly endangers the mission.
“It’s destroying everything,” the Psychologist says, to which the Biologist responds, “It’s not destroying. It’s making something new.”

Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson also star in the film based on the book of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. Alex Garland wrote and directed the film.
It will be released on Feb. 23.
