‘Teaser’ Invites Go Out for Apple’s Expected iPhone 5 Announcement

Invitation to press event on Sept. 12 drops heavy hint that a new iPhone is nigh

Apple is teasing us with the iPhone 5.

The company has sent out invitations for a Sept. 12 press event in San Francisco, where it's expected the company will unveil the highly anticipated new smartphone.

The big clue is the invitation itself, which bears the number "5" featured prominently, and represented as a shadow of the number "12."

If the speculation proves to be founded, the unveiling is a long time in the making. Chatter among Apple loyalists last year suggested that the company was working on an iPhone 5, but the company ended up disappointing expectations by announcing instead the iPhone 4s.

Apple, which typically keeps details of its announcements tightly under wraps, has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

It's also believed that Apple will unveil an iPad mini this fall, though whether that will occur at the Sept. 12 event is anybody's guess.
