Shortly before Amber Tamblyn became embroiled in a Twitter fight with conservative actor James Woods, she saw her directorial debut, “Paint It Black,” open in select theaters this summer. With their feud now making headlines, distributor Imagination Worldwide announced Thursday it will release the film on VOD Oct. 3. You can watch the trailer above.

Based on the cult novel by Janet Fitch, “Paint It Black” stars “Search Party’s” Alia Shawkat as hard-partying artist forced to confront her dead boyfriend’s caustic mother (Janet McTeer), after the bereaved woman blames her for his sudden death.

TheWrap’s Tricia Olszewslo praised Shawkat’s performance in the film, noting how the actress “breaks out subtleties that she’s never been able to show off in other roles.”

Tamblyn explained to Indiewire that we was drawn to adapting the book after having “a very instantaneous, cinematic, visceral reaction to the language” of it. “I really felt like, ‘Wow. Wouldn’t that make for a great movie, just about the tormented, grief-ridden, inside, interior minds of women?'”

Tamblyn spent much of this week taking down Woods on Twitter after the actor compared the gay coming-of-age film “Call Me By Your Name” to pedophilia.

She started by accusing Woods of making an inappropriate advance when she was 16 years old. He tweeted a denial, prompting her to pen an open letter for Teen Vogue that included the line: “Since you’ve now called me a liar, I will now call you a silencer.” You can read the full piece here.

Jennifer Lawrence re-teams with Francis Lawrence, the director who helmed the final three “Hunger Games” films, in the first trailer for their latest collaboration, “Red Sparrow.” 20th Century Fox released the trailer Thursday, a day before Lawrence’s arthouse horror film “mother!” opens.

In “Red Sparrow,” Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova, a prima ballerina seemingly sabotaged with an injury by another performer in her dance company. Not wanting to let her able body and dramatic versatility go to waste, the Russian government recruits her as a spy.

Lawrence sports multiple looks and wigs in the short preview, channeling Charlize Theron in “Atomic Blonde” at one point. Charlotte Rampling also features in the trailer as a tough-looking instructor, as does Joel Edgerton, who seems to have a big role. Joining them along for the ride are Matthias Schoenaerts, Mary-Louise Parker and Jeremy Irons.

The film is based on the book of the same name by Jason Matthews  and boasts a screenplay by Justin Haythe.

A24 on Tuesday dropped the first full trailer for James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist,” just after its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie is based on Greg Sesteroand’s book of the same name that chronicles the making of what is generally considered the best worst movie of all time: 2003’s cult favorite “The Room.”

In the film, Franco plays Tommy Wiseau, who wrote, directed and was the male lead in “The Room.” Franco’s brother Dave Franco portrays co-star and friend Sestero.

Seth Rogen’s character is put in the unfortunate situation of keeping the whole production on track, which proves impossible given Wiseau’s eccentricities. Paul Schur, Ari Graynor, Alison Brie, Jacki Weaver and Josh Hutcherson all co-star.

Franco also directed, while Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber wrote the comedic look-back.

Prior to its TIFF debut, “The Disaster Artist” premiered to rave reviews at SXSW, where Franco was labelled as a probable Best Actor contender. Based on its positive reception, A24 gave the film an awards-friendly release date of December 1.

There, he “uncovers is a sinister world of fraternity, violence and hyper-masculinity and a woman (Imogen Poots),” according to Bleecker Street.

Stearns last film, “Faults,” starred Mary Elizabeth Winstead and received strong notices at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with an exciting filmmaker like Riley,” said Bleecker Street CEO Andrew Karpen in a statement. “Ever since we saw his work at Sundance and SXSW we knew we wanted to be in business with him and we can’t wait to bring his original and hilarious vision to audiences around the world.”

Stearns called “The Art of Self-Defense” a “very personal film that happens to have karate in it,” in a statement. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by actors, a crew, producers and a distributor like Bleecker Street who care as deeply about the project as I do,” he added.

The film is produced by Andrew Kortschak, Cody Ryder, Stephanie Whonsetler and Walter Kortschak. Karpen is an Executive Producer on the film.

The deal was negotiated by Kent Sanderson of Bleecker Street and Avy Eschenasy on behalf of Bleecker Street. CAA handled negotiations on behalf of the filmmakers.

“I, Tonya” received strong reviews in Toronto from critics who praised the film’s darkly humorous take on Tonya Harding’s shift from a famous figure skater to an exile from her sport after it was discovered she was involved in an attack on rival skater Nancy Kerrigan. The film also stars Allison Janey as Harding’s mother and Sebastian Stan as Harding’s ex-husband, Jeff Gillooly. Julianne Nicholson, Paul Walter Hauser and Bobby Cannavale co-star.

Craig Gillespie directed the film from a screenplay by Steve Rogers. Bryan Unkeless, Steven Rogers, Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley produced the film. Len Blavatnik and Aviv Giladi executive produced the film for AI Films, who financed the project. Rosanne Korenberg and Zanne Devine are also executive producers.

The deal was negotiated by NEON and 30WEST and CAA and UTA on behalf of the filmmakers. Bill Block, CEO of Miramax, Adrian Lopez, SVP Business and Legal Affairs at Miramax and Vince Holden of AI Films negotiated the deal on behalf of their respective companies.

30WEST, which was founded by former CAA agent Micah Green and entrepreneur Dan Friedkin also partnered with Cinetic Media to negotiate a deal at Toronto to sell domestic rights Morgan Spurlock’s sequel to “Super Size Me” to YouTube Red.

George Michael is back.

Almost nine months after the pop superstar’s death at age 53, his first posthumous single has been released and it‘s a remix of “Fantasy.” The original iteration of the song was released as a B-side in 1990, and later as a bonus track on 2011’s deluxe version of his iconic “Faith” album.

The remix by producer Nile Rodgers premiered Thursday on BBC Radio 2’s “The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.” Michael and Rodgers had been working on the song shortly before the singer’s passing, according to People. Michael died of heart failure on Christmas Day, 2016.

“To be asked by George Michael to rework one of his songs was one of the greatest honors of my life,” Rogers told People. “I was in his London living room on Dec. 23, 2016. I flew home on the 24th, and expected a call from him on the 25th. Instead, I got an alert on my phone that he was found dead. I was devastated. I only hope I’ve made him proud.”

The song differs from the original via a stripped down production that amplifies Michael’s vocals and features Rodgers’ signature guitar rhythms.

The song has won over U.K. media, with The Guardian praising it as a “reminder that George Michael could invest a dancefloor with sex and wit like few other pop stars.” The Telegraph called the song “so lean and sexy you wonder why it was never a hit before.”

With Oscars season now in full swing, Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for its major film contender this year, Dee Rees’ “Mudbound.”

After drawing raves at the Sundance Film Festival in January, it’s next set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival before launching on Netflix and opening in theaters Nov. 17.

Set in the rural American South during World War II, the racially charged drama centers on two families bound together by the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta. Jason Clarke and Carey Mulligan play a married couple working to keep their small farming business alive in harsh climates. Mary J. Blige earned raves at Sundance for her performance as a sharecropper who’s worked the land for generations, but struggles to keep her family afloat in the racist climate.

Garrett Hedlund co-stars as a man returning from war who strikes up a friendship with a black soldier (Jason Mitchell).

Rees, who also penned the screenplay, last directed Queen Latifah in the Emmy-winning HBO movie, “Bessie.”

As part of the deal, announced Monday, Open Road’s Tom Ortenberg will continue as the motion picture company’s CEO.

Tang Media — a China-connected firm founded by in 2015 by Donald Tang, a former chairman and CEO of Bear Stearns Asia — bought Open Road from AMC Entertainment Inc. and Regal Entertainment Group as part of a larger, overall $500 million expansion plan.

The two exhibition companies launched Open Road in 2011 with the goal to release filmmaker-focused and prestige titles throughout the year. Its biggest success was 2016’s “Spotlight,” which earned nearly $45 million in the U.S. and won the Best Picture Oscar.

Earlier this year, both AMC and Regal indicated that they were exploring a sale after valuing their losses in the joint venture at more than $49.1 million each in financial statements — a total of $98 million.

The sale comes a week after fellow indie distributor, Broad Green Pictures, laid off 20 percent of its staff and shuttered its production division after suffering a series of flops at the box office.

“Open Road is among the best independent theatrical distribution companies in the entertainment world, from its established infrastructure and dedicated leadership, to its solid track record for producing captivating stories,” Tang said in a statement. “Open Road’s addition to Tang Media Partners is a critical step in our strategy to enable our production team to collaborate with the most talented, visionary filmmakers in bringing targeted content to audiences everywhere.”

Upcoming Open Road releases include the animated family comedy “The Nut Job 2,” “Home Again,” starring Reese Witherspoon, and “Marshall,” which stars Chadwick Boseman as Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.

“Our Open Road team is excited for this new milestone with TMP,” said Tom Ortenberg. “We have cultivated a strong reputation with filmmakers who seek theatrical releases outside of the major studio ecosystems. Matt Damon goes to extreme lengths to protect his family in the first trailer for George Clooney’s “Suburbicon,” which Paramount released Thursday timed to its addition to the Venice Film Festival lineup.

Written by Joel and Ethan Coen, who often collaborate with Clooney, the 1950s-set film centers on Gardner Lodge (Damon), a husband and father forced to take matters into his own hands after his home is invaded.

Julianne Moore co-stars as a family member who moves in to help Lodge out following the incident. By the looks of the trailer, the pair make some very bad choices along the way, including murder. Josh Brolin and Oscar Isaac co-star.

The Coen brothers originally planned to direct the film themselves with Clooney in Damon’s role, but the actor convinced the pair to let him helm it instead.

The synopsis from Paramount Pictures reads: “‘Suburbicon’ is a peaceful, idyllic suburban community with affordable homes and manicured lawns… the perfect place to raise a family, and in the summer of 1959, the Lodge family is doing just that. But the tranquil surface masks a disturbing reality, as husband and father Gardner Lodge (Damon) must navigate the town’s dark underbelly of betrayal, deceit, and violence. This is a tale of very flawed people making very bad choices.”

“Suburbicon” opens in the thick of awards season on Oct. 27.

Daniel Craig will reprise his performance as James Bond in the spy series’ next installment, according to the New York Times.

Franchise producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson of EON Productions, announced on Monday that the 25th James Bond film will hit the U.S. on November 8, 2019. It will rollout in Europe one week prior, keeping with tradition.

Neal Purvis and Robert Wade will return to write the script, as they have for each Craig-led Bond — titles including “Skyfall,” “Spectre,” “Quantum of Solace” and “Casino Royale.”

The New York Times says Craig’s return is a “done deal,” citing two sources with knowledge of the negotiations. In April, TheWrap reported that four major studios are locked in a bidding war for the one-off rights. Warner Bros., Universal, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures were all vying for the project — no domestic distributor has been announced yet, but the last four films were distributed by Sony and MGM.

The actor first played 007 in the 2006 film “Casino Royale.” He later appeared in “Quantum of Solace” (2008), “Skyfall” (2012) and “Spectre” (2015).

Apart from Bond, the actor is working on a TV series titled “Purity,” on which he also serves as executive producer. He also just wrapped “Kings,” in which he stars alongside Halle Berry.

Craig is represented by CAA and Slate PR.

Sony has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment. MGM declined to comment. A representative for Craig has also not yet responded for comment.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is here to dominate the day in his new, ridiculously expensive-looking ad for Apple, released Monday.

The action star hyped his collaboration with the tech giant over the weekend, calling “The Rock & Siri Dominate the Day” “the biggest, coolest, sexiest, funnest (is that a word?) movie ever.”

“And I have the greatest co-star of all time, Siri,” he added. “I make movies for the world to enjoy and we also made this one to motivate you to get out there and get the job done. I want you to watch it, have fun with it and then go live it.”

As it turns out, Johnson wasn’t touting a feature-length film, but a long commercial (it clocks in at close to four-minutes) for Siri, Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant, that features prominently in the creative short.

The ad — produced by Steven Bucks Productions, the company Johnson co-founded with Dany Garcia — riffs on the actor’s reputation as the busiest man in show business. Prompted by a newscaster who questions how many more projects he can possibly take on, Johnson hurls himself into action on a mission to fulfill his remaining life goals — all with the help of Siri.

Johnson most recently starred in the summer comedy, “Baywatch.” He next appears in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” out Dec. 20.

Unfortunately for the pop star, China’s not buying it.

On Tuesday, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture released a statement confirming that the singer had been barred from performing in the country because of past instances of “bad behavior” in China and elsewhere.

“Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but he is also a controversial young foreign singer,” read the statement.

“In order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers. We hope that as Justin Bieber matures, he can continue to improve his own words and actions, and truly become a singer beloved by the public.”

The Bureau was responding to a Chinese fan who contacted them, asking why her idol hasn’t performed in the country for several years, despite stops in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the Philippines.

The statement doesn’t specify which instances of bad behavior caused China to shut its doors to the star, but it doesn’t take too much sleuthing to connect the dots.

In 2014, the singer posted photos of himself visiting the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which honors Japanese people who died in war, including convicted war criminals from World War II.

The Foreign Ministry of China released a statement at the time, saying: “I hope this singer can learn more about the history of Japanese militarism, and the wrongful historical and militaristic views promoted by the shrine after his visit.”

The year before, Bieber was photographed being carried up the Great Wall of China by his bodyguards. Earlier in his trip, he was filmed skateboarding through the streets of Beijing while being chased by his bodyguards.

Bieber isn’t alone in being banned by China for unsuitable behavior: last year, Lady Gaga was reportedly barred for meeting with the Dalai Lama. Oasis and Maroon 5 were banned for similar reasons.

To kick off Comic-Con in gruesome fashion, Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for “Jigsaw,” the eighth film in the never-ending “Saw” franchise.

The upcoming sequel, which arrives seven years after 2010’s “Saw 3D,” comes from “Daybreakers” filmmakers Michael and Peter Spierig, and looks to be a return to terrifying form following the last few entires, which were poorly received by critics. (“Saw 3D” boasts a woeful 9 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.)

The “Jigsaw” trailer showcases more elaborate death traps and teases the return of the titular villain (or a copycat), who takes sadistic pleasure in pitting his victims against each other. Tobin Bell, who played the baddie but died in “Saw III,” isn’t listed in the official credits.

All seven previous “Saw” films have a combined worldwide box office gross upwards of $870 million on a combined budget of roughly $67 million — meaning they’re extremely profitable.

“Jigsaw” stars Matt Passmore, Callum Keith Rennie, Clé Bennett, Hannah Emily Anderson, Laura Vandervoort, Mandela Van Peebles, Paul Braunstein, Brittany Allen, and Josiah Black. The film is written by Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger and is produced by Oren Koules, Mark Burg, and Greg Hoffman.

Lionsgate opens it just in time for Halloween on Oct. 27.

Ahead of its Hall H panel at Comic-Con on Thursday, 20th Century Fox has released a new red-band trailer for “Kingman: The Golden Circle.” And like Matthew Vaughn’s original hit, his sequel looks to be a bloody good time.

The follow-up to the 2015 spy thriller sees newly minted Kingsman Eggsy (Taron Egerton) and Roxy (Sophie Cookson) travel with their tech advisor Merlin (Mark Strong) to the U.S. after their headquarters is destroyed by Poppy (Julianne Moore), a criminal mastermind who holds connections to the shadowy organization known as The Golden Circle.

While there, Eggsy and Roxy team up with the Statesmen, the American counterparts to the Kingsmen. While the Kingsmen bear code names based on the Knights of the Round Table, like Galahad and Lancelot, the Statesmen bear alcoholic code names, like Tequila (Channing Tatum) and Jack Daniels (Pedro Pascal).

Jeff Bridges plays the head of the Statesmen, with Halle Berry as the group’s tech support. Colin Firth and Michael Caine reprise their roles as Harry Hart and Chester King, who were both thought to have been killed off in the last “Kingsman” film.

“Kingsman: The Golden Circle” hits theaters September 22, 2017.

“Lining up a shot today from my director’s monitor,” Howard captioned under the photo, released Tuesday. The pic shows Howard next to a monitor that features Glover as the iconic “Star Wars” character, played in the original trilogy by Billy Dee Williams.

Glover, as Lando, is seen inside the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, the iconic spacecraft that Han Solo won from Lando in “The Empire Strikes Back.”

Howard took over the director’s chair just two days after Phil Lord and Chris Miller were let go from the “Star Wars” spinoff last month. The directors had been at the wheel of the film for nearly two years. Physical production commenced in late January in the U.K., and the men completed nearly 17 weeks of shooting through May.

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, the role that Harrison Ford made famous. Starring alongside him and Glover are Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Michael Kenneth Williams.

The untitled Han Solo project is scheduled for a May 2018 release date.

ABC’s trailer for “Bachelor in Paradise,” released Monday, addresses the season four controversy head-on, in the most tone-deaf way imaginable.

The “Bachelor” spinoff series returns Aug. 12, four days later than originally planned, following Warner Bros. temporarily shutting down production due to allegations of sexual misconduct involving contestants Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson. The show resumed rolling after the studio announced that the results of its investigation did “not support any charge of misconduct by a cast member.”

Watching the 30-second trailer, which opens with footage of a tropical storm, you’d think bad weather is what caused the show’s delay. Neither Olympios or Jackson appear in the spot — instead we’re greeted with tweets from fans devastated by “Bachelor in Paradise’s” rumored cancellation as the investigation was ongoing.

“I’M DEVASTATED,” one reads. “THE WORLD IS ENDING,” says another.

Iggy Rodriguez, from Rachel Lindsay’s season of “The Bachelorette,” then announces: “Paradise is back!”

Both Olympios and Jackson will appear on the “Bachelor in Paradise Special.” Other cast members include Amanda Stanton, Robby Hayes, Taylor Nolan, Raven Gates and Derek Peth.

During the investigation, Olympios had hired Hollywood attorney Marty Singer to represent her. Her own team conducted an investigation into the matter and later concluded it to her satisfaction, Olympios said. According to Stanton, the producers implemented stricter drinking rules following the scandal.

The video capturing her grooving — alongside her co-star Simon Quarterman, wearing red lipstick (why, we’re not sure) — appears to have been shot inside her trailer on the “Westworld” set. That would make sense, given the show’s second season is currently in production.

“Westworld” tied with “Saturday Night Live” on Thursday as the most nominated shows of 2017. Thompson was overlooked, but her show netted major nominations including drama series, lead actress (Evan Rachel Wood), lead actor (Anthony Hopkins), supporting actress (Thandie Newton) and supporting actor (Jeffrey Wright). The actress plays Charlotte Hale, the ruthless Executive Director in charge of managing many facets of the titular adult theme park.

Season 2 of “Westworld” is likely to debut on HBO sometime in 2018. Thompson will next be seen as warrior Valkyrie in “Thor: Ragnarok,” which opens Nov. 3.

Donald Trump Jr. went on the defensive Tuesday, releasing a series of emails from last summer with an acquaintance who claimed to have damaging information about Hillary Clinton from the Russia government and to which the president’s son responded, “I love it!”

Trump Jr. tweeted out what he said was the full correspondence with U.K.-based music promoter and tabloid reporter Rob Goldstone shortly after the New York Times published the text of the emails.

It was Goldstone who helped to broker the meeting last June between Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya and Trump Jr., the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and then-campaign chairman Paul Manafort — a meeting that has become a major focus of inquiry since it was first disclosed last weekend by the Times.

In one email, Goldstone promised to provide information that “would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father. … This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”

Trump Jr. replied within minutes, “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

In a later email, Goldstone offered to set up a meeting with Veselnitskaya, whom he described as a “Russian government attorney.”

It’s unclear what the damaging information might have entailed and there is no evidence that it was linked to the Russian government’s hacking of emails at the Democratic National Committee and their subsequent leaking to the public.

Trump Jr. has dismissed the value of any information Veselnitskaya might have provided. “Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense,” he told the Times on Sunday. “No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”

The emails also show that Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort were included (at least partially) in the email thread about setting up the media.

The president’s eldest son has denied any wrongdoing and said he posted the emails in an effort to be “totally transparent.”

“Media and Dems are extremely invested in the Russia story,” he tweeted earlier on Tuesday. “If this nonsense meeting is all they have after a year, I understand the desperation!”

Trump Jr.’s tweet arrived after the New York Times published a story on Monday evening claiming that President Trump’s eldest son was told in an email that a June 2016 meeting with a Kremlin-linked lawyer would deliver intelligence to aid his father’s campaign.

Three sources told the Times that the email message came from Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped organize the June 2016 meeting. Goldstone met Trump Jr. at the Miss Universe Pageant in Moscow.

The message indicated that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information against Clinton, according to the Times report.

However, there is no evidence to suggest that it was related to the Russian hacking that resulted in the release of thousands of Democratic emails a week after Trump Jr.’s meeting.

Earlier on Monday, Trump Jr. took to Twitter to retweet a few of his father’s messages and attack the media for coverage of the meeting last June, which the Times initially disclosed on Saturday.

Trump Jr. said he attended the meeting because he could have potentially received information that was damaging to the Clinton campaign, and mocked the way the media has covered the situation.

“Obviously I’m the first person on a campaign to ever take a meeting to hear info about an opponent … went nowhere but had to listen,” the president’s son wrote on Monday.

Trump Jr. said that he met with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, at the request of an acquaintance [Goldstone] from the Miss Universe pageant.

When they met, he said the lawyer “stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Mrs. Clinton. In the wake of outcry over a meeting Trump Jr. had last year with a Kremlin-linked lawyer two weeks after his father clinched the Republican nomination, the New York Times reported Monday night that he received an email informing him he would receive damaging information about Hillary Clinton as part of Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy.

Earlier on Monday, Trump Jr. took to Twitter to retweet a few of his father’s messages and attack the media for coverage of the meeting last June, which the Times initially disclosed on Saturday.

“How stupid of Don, Jr.,” said host Joe Scarborough while discussing the latest developments, which dominated the first hour of MSNBC’s morning show.

“I mean I guess it runs in the family, to go on Twitter when he is clearly in legal jeopardy. This time yesterday morning everyone knew he was clearly in legal jeopardy. He goes up on Twitter again yesterday only to be undercut by the New York Times last night because inside his own White House, inside his own administration are leaking on him.”

Trump Jr. said that he met with the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, at the request of an acquaintance from the Miss Universe pageant.

On Monday’s “Morning Joe,” a legal expert went so far as to suggest Trump, Jr. could go to jail for participating the meeting.

“It’s a crime to solicit or accept anything from a foreign national in a campaign,” MSNBC justice and security analyst Matthew Miller said. “It doesn’t have to be money… it can be, potentially, accepting information. So he’s potentially confessing in his statement to committing a crime.”

“It was time to break with a long list of male presidents and invite a brilliant talented and inspiring woman to chair our international competition jury,” Venice artistic director Alberto Barbera said in a statement.

“I am extremely happy that Annette Bening has accepted this role, which she will carry out by virtue of her stature, her intellect and the talents she has manifested over the course of her career, in Hollywood, Europe and on the stage,” he added.

The last woman to head the Venice jury was Catherine Deneuve in 2006. Bening is the sixth female jury president at the world’s oldest film festival, following Deneuve, Gong Li (2002), Jane Campion (1997), Sabine Azéma (1987), and Suso Cecchi D’Amico (1980).

Bening has been nominated for an Academy Award four times (for “The Grifters,” “American Beauty,” “Being Julia” and “The Kids Are All Right”) and has won two Golden Globes over the course of her career. She most recently starred in Mike Mills’ “20th Century Women.” Upcoming projects include “The Seagull,” opposite Saoirse Ronan, and the drama “Life, Itself,” with Olivia Wilde and Oscar Isaac.

“I’m honored to be asked to serve as the president of the jury for this year’s Venice Film Festival,” Bening said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing the movies and working with my fellow jury members to celebrate the best of this year’s cinema from all over the world.”

In recent years, the Venice Film Festival has become an important awards season stop: past world premieres include “La La Land,” “Spotlight” and “Gravity.”

The conflict dates back to 2012, when the Tolkien estate and book publisher HarperCollins filed a $80 million lawsuit alleging that Warners, its New Line subsidiary and rights holder Saul Kaentz Co. infringed copyright and breached contract.

The plaintiffs claimed that the studio never had rights to license characters from the hit films in digital offshoots such as online slot machines, video games and other digital merchandising.

In response, Warner Bros. filed counterclaims, alleging that the repudiation by the estate of the revered fantasy writer cost the company millions of dollars in licensing opportunities and less exposure to directer Peter Jackson two trilogies. The studio demanded damages for its own claim of breach of contract.

A legal filing, released Monday, said the two parties have resolved their difference “amicably.” Terms of the settle have not been disclosed. Per the filing, no party is entitled to recover fees or costs.

Warner Bros. and HarperCollins have not responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.

“The Complaint, the Warner Amended Counterclaim, and the Zaentz Amended Counterclaim are dismissed in their entirety with prejudice as to all parties thereto,” notes the filing.

This doesn’t mark the only legal tussle between Tolkien’s estate and Warner Bros.: In 2009, in order to proceed with the making of “The Hobbit,” the estate and New Line, a division of the studio, came to a settlement after Tolkien’s representatives claimed the company had cheated it out of millions of dollars in earnings.

Collectively, the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” films have grossed close to $6 billion at the worldwide box office.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported news of the settlement.

For the Vanity Fair profile, the happy couple shared that they had lunch with Trump back in January when he told them that if they planned on getting married, they should consider doing so at Mar-a-Lago or the White House. In his tweets bashing the pair, Trump said that they stayed at the resort for three nights over New Years’ Eve, while claiming they “insisted on joining me” — to which he “said no!”

Scarborough went so far as to claim that White House adviser Jared Kushner even offered to officiate the event, but the president didn’t like the idea. The “Morning Joe” namesake told Vanity Fair that Trump fired back at Kushner, “Why would you marry them? They could have the President of the United States marry them.”

Even before Thursday’s attacks, Scarborough and Brzezinski had ruled out the idea of Trump hosting or officiating the festivities.

“The White House that I grew up in was an amazing place. If it weren’t Trump, it might be something to think about,” Brzezinski told Vanity Fair. “The mental picture is just fascinating, but the reality is just . . . no. No, no, no, no, no.”

Before Trump won the election, the “Morning Joe” co-hosts were criticized for being too close to Trump during the campaign. They have since turned on him in a bigly way. On their show, they’ve compared him to someone with dementia, and have called his actions in office “sick, shameful, pathetic, and un-American.”

Joe Johnston’s original was about a board game that opened a portal to an alternate, wild universe. The redo swaps that board game for a classic, ’90s-era video game console that transports a group of misbehaving teens into the game itself where they take on alter-ego avatars played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.

In Johnston’s film, no actor swapping occurred.

The rowdy gang of “Bad Moms” are back together for the sequel, “A Bad Moms Christmas,” which opens this November just over a year after the original was a surprise summer hit for studio STX. The company premiered the first red-band trailer for the follow-up on Wednesday.

Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn are all back for more mischief as three foul-mouthed mothers forced to deal with their own mothers visiting for the holidays.

The trio spend most of the trailer commiserating about their busy lives in a shopping mall, while sipping on beers. Like the first film, this sequel looks rowdy, with loads of binge drinking, creative swearing and sex jokes.

Playing the visiting grandmothers are Susan Sarandon, Cheryl Hines and Christine Baranski, who gets the best line of the promo: “Moms don’t enjoy, they give joy — that’s how being a mom works.”

Jon Lucas and Scott Moore wrote and directed the film, with Suzanne Todd as producer and Bill Block as executive producer.

“Bad Moms” made $113 million at the domestic box office and $179 million worldwide after its July 29 release.

After tearing up the screen in “Logan,” Hugh Jackman will next be seen donning his dancing shoes for the musical “The Greatest Showman,” in which he stars as P.T. Barnum — the man behind the game-changing Barnum & Bailey Circus. 20th Century Fox released the trailer for the potential awards player on Wednesday.

Zac Efron, Zendaya and Michelle Williams star alongside Jackman in the rags-to-riches story, that’s been seven years in the making and features original songs from “La La Land’s” Oscar-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The film takes place in the mid-1800s, but their contributions are said to have a modern sensibility as teased in the trailer.

For Jackman, “The Greatest Showman” marks his first on-screen musical since 2012’s “Les Misérables.” Williams last sang on Broadway as Sally Bowles in “Cabaret,” while Efron honed his musical chops in the “High School Musical” trilogy, as well as 2007’s “Hairspray,” alongside John Travolta.

Zendaya, who stars in this summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” also features in the trailer as a trapeze artist.

“The Greatest Showman” marks Michael Gracey’s directorial debut; the script comes from Bill Condon (“Dreamgirls”) and Jenny Bicks (“Sex and the City”).

Fake news? How about fake magazine covers.

President Donald Trump, who regularly blasts major news outlets like CNN as “fake news,” has been caught in a fake controversy of his own.

On Tuesday, The Washington Post uncovered that the Trump Organization’s golf clubs in America and Europe have been displaying a fake Time magazine cover featuring the president.

The phony cover depicts Trump with the headline: “Donald Trump: The ‘Apprentice’ is a television smash!”

A spokesperson for Time confirmed to the news outlet that the March 1, 2009 cover is a phony. The date coincides with the eighth season premiere of Trump’s reality TV show, “Celebrity Apprentice.”

The Post reported that the framed cover has been seen in at least four of the company’s golf clubs, including one resort in Scotland where it was taken down a few weeks ago. According to employees who spoke with the Post, no explanation was given as to why it was removed from display.

It was Kate Winslet, not Trump, who graced the March 2, 2009 cover. Both the real cover and the fake feature secondary headlines for stories (real) about President Barack Obama and the financial crisis.

A Post reporter who recently visited one of the properties knew something was off when they noticed the red border on the Trump cover was thinner than other Time covers. Additionally, the secondary headlines are positioned on the right side — on a real Time cover, they are situated across the top.

The Trump Organization did not respond to the Post’s request for comment on why the fake cover is displayed prominently in their properties. White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders declined to say whether the president had known the cover wasn’t real.

“We couldn’t comment on the decor at Trump Golf clubs one way or another,” she wrote in an email to the Post.

Trump made his debut as Time cover-boy for its Jan. 16, 1989 issue and didn’t reappear until the Aug. 31, 2015 issue, two months after he declared his presidential run. Time named him Person of the Year for end of year issue in 2016.

A right-leaning government watchdog group, led by conservative firebrand James O’Keefe, released an undercover video on Tuesday showing a CNN producer criticizing the network’s coverage of President Trump’s ties to Russia.

In the nearly nine-minute-long video, an associate from O’Keefe’s Project Veritas is seen asking John Bonifield, a supervising producer in the CNN Medical Unit, if the network’s coverage of the Russia investigation is “bulls—.”

“Could be bulls—,” the man responds. “I mean, it’s mostly bulls— right now. Like we don’t have any giant proof.”

“The leaks,” he adds, “keep leaking and there’s so many great leaks, and it’s amazing. I just refuse to believe that if they had something really good like that, that [it] wouldn’t leak because we’ve been getting all these other leaks. So, I just feel like they don’t really have it but they want to keep digging. And so I think the president is probably right to say, like, look you are witch hunting me. You have no smoking gun. You have no real proof.”

Bonifield also goes on to say that Trump is “probably right” to say that cable news outlets like CNN are pursuing a “witch hunt” against the president and his administration.

A source from CNN confirmed Bonifield’s identity to TheWrap and said he’s not going to be disciplined. CNN just sees it as an employee expressing an opinion about the company’s reporting, said the source, who stressed that Bonifield is not involved with the network’s political coverage. The source also said that Bonifield was not aware he was being filmed, and that the person he interacted with was associated with Project Veritas.

The video comes a day after three CNN staffers resigned following the removal on Friday of an online story about a supposed congressional investigation into a Russian investment fund and a financier with ties to the Trump administration.

According to the network, an internal investigation found that “some standard editorial processes were not followed when the article was published.”

For years, O’Keefe has targeted liberal groups with undercover video and audio recordings but his Project Veritas has been criticized for questionable tactics and selective editing of footage.

According to PolitiFact, his videos are “edited in ways that the context of the conversation or the meaning of the statement isn’t always clear.”

O’Keefe first gained notoriety for his 2009 headline-grabbing release of undercover videos alleging illegal activity by employees of ACORN, a community organizing group that helped register low-income people to vote.

Stephen Colbert returned to Monday’s “Late Show” after a surprise trip to Russia with a lacerating apology for President Donald Trump, whom he’s been ridiculing relentlessly on his CBS program.

A day after Colbert’s return from St. Petersburg, where the comedian filmed footage for upcoming sketches, Trump took to Twitter to accuse former President Barack Obama of failing to act despite knowing about Russia meddling in the U.S. election.

“The real story is that President Obama did NOTHING after being informed in August about Russian meddling,” Trump tweeted on Monday. “With 4 months looking at Russia…under a magnifying glass, they have zero ‘tapes’ of T people colluding. There is no collusion & no obstruction. I should be given an apology!”

Colbert took it upon himself to give the president what he asked for.

“I think I speak for the majority of Americans when I say, ‘I’m sorry you’re president,” he said. Pointing to his heart, Colbert added, “It comes from here.”

While in Russia, Colbert appeared on a talk show to “announce” his run for president in 2020. “I thought it would be better to cut out the middleman and just tell the Russians myself,” he said in a clip he showed from his interview on “Evening Urgant.”

“For those of you not familiar with late-night TV in Russia, it might seem a little foreign. Let me explain it to you: A white male host does some monologue jokes, then sits behind a desk to interview celebrities,” Colbert quipped. “It works over there somehow, I’m not sure.”

During Monday’s opening monologue, Colbert also shared that the excursion took months of planning, and that he and his crew shot 13-hour days and completed about four or five segments that will likely air this week.

Spike Lee’s first TV series, “She’s Gotta Have It,” will launch on Netflix this Thanksgiving, Nov. 23, the streaming giant announced Monday.

The 10-episode series is billed by the company as a “contemporary update” of Lee’s 1986 debut film of the same name.

DeWanda Wise (“Shots Fired”) leads the show as Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her friend group, her work, and her three lovers: Greer Childs (Cleo Anthony), Jamie Overstreet (Lyriq Bent) and Mars Blackmon (“Hamilton’s” Anthony Ramos). Chyna Layne, Ilfenesh Hadeara, Margot Bingha, Sydney Morton, and Joie Lee all co-star.

Lee directs all 10 episodes of the series. He also serves as the creator and a producer on the show, with Tonya Lewis Lee as executive producer, and Barry Michael Cooper and Lynn Nottage also producers.

“We are getting an opportunity to revisit these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant garde 3 decades later,” Lee said in a statement “With all that said it was my wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, producer in her own right, who had the vision to take my film from the big screen and turn it into an episodic series. It had not occurred to me at all.”

The series marks Lee’s first real foray into television. He has previously directed TV movies and documentaries like 2006’s “When the Levee’s Broke,” which explored the U.S. government’s response to Hurricane Katrina.

Lee’s original film was shot in 12 days during the hot summer of 1986, and is regarded as a classic for ushering in a change in how African Americans are portrayed in movies.

Netflix gave a first season order to “She’s Gotta Have It” in September.

John Oliver took on the anti-vaccine movement on Sunday’s “Last Week Tonight,” pinning a lot of it on President Donald Trump.

The comedian began his segment by arguing that people can often forget how well vaccines work because nobody posts Facebook statuses like, “I didn’t get polio again today!”

“Small groups are both skeptical and vocal about vaccines which is nothing new, but these days those voices have been amplified by the human megaphone that is the President of the United States,” said Oliver.

The host then played a clip showing Trump on the campaign trail, in which the businessman expressed skepticism over vaccines, saying that he believed children receive too many shots at once, and wanted to spread out how frequently children are given the shots.

“This is also a sentiment he’s expressed online,” Oliver reminded his audience, displaying a tweet by Trump that reads: “Tiny children are not horses.”

“And that is an assertion that Politifact rates as, “Yeah, I mean, I guess technically we’ve gotta give him that, but good grief,” Oliver joked.

Oliver then noted that an unprecedented rise in measles broke out in Minnesota’s Somali community because parents refused to give their children the shots. He blamed it partly on false information doled out by Andrew Wakefield, the director of “Vaxxed: from Cover-Up to Catastrophe” and a disgraced British former doctor who published a study in 1998 that claimed links between a vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and autism.

“He’s basically, the Lance Armstrong of doctors,” Oliver joked.

“Very few people will say they are completely anti-vaccine,” he continued said. “Instead — like the president — they’ll say ‘I’m not anti-vaccine, but.'”

Oliver ended on a personal note, sharing that his child was born prematurely and despite that, he’s still vaccinating his son on schedule.

So read the taglines in promotional material released this week for Michael Bay’s fifth film in the “Transformers” series, “The Last Knight,” which opened Wednesday. Assuming “The Last Knight” is the final film the blockbuster saga, the adverts wouldn’t bear questioning — except it’s not.

The first “Transformers” spinoff film, centered around the lovable Bumblebee character is in the works with director Travis Knight (“Kubo and the Two Stings”) and actress Hailee Steinfeld both attached. It’s scheduled for release on June 8, 2018. Plus there’s a “Transformers” sequel dated for summer of 2019, details for which are not yet public.

So what gives?

As Bay indicated to Fandango in June, the latest “Transformers” film is his last.

“These movies that I’ve done, they are massive movies. They take a lot out of you,” Bay said. “I’ve done it enough, and I’ve had a great time doing it. I’m going out with a bang on this one, and I feel like you gotta go out while you’re ahead, you know. I think I’ve had a good run, and I’ve got a lot of other movies I want to do.”

When reached out for comment, a Paramount spokesperson confirmed the “franchise is continuing” to TheWrap.

“Five films in a decade by one filmmaker has never been done before,” was the reasoning offered as to why the company chose to describe “The Last Knight” as “The Final Chapter” — meaning Bay’s “final chapter” in the saga (although he’s producing the Bumblebee spinoff).

“The Last Knight” is off to a lukewarm start in North America, where it earned $8.1 million on Thursday for a muted two-day total of $23.8 million, the lowest start of any title in the franchise. Overseas it’s faring better: It opened in China Friday with an estimated $47.9 million, 69 percent higher than the 2014 bow of “Transformers: Age Of Extinction,” in local currency.

“Saturday Night Live” alums Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers reunited on the latter’s NBC late night show on Wednesday to bash some of President Trump’s supporters.

Reviving their classic “Weekend Update” segment “Really!?!,” the pair took on alt-right, pro-Trump activists who attempted to disrupt Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of “Julius Caesar” on Friday, in which Caesar resembles the president.

“Now let me get this straight. You waited in line to get tickets to a play you already hated. And then you watched it for three hours and then you ran on stage to protest,” Poehler said. “But not the president, but someone who was dressed like the president from getting pretend-stabbed with a fake knife. Really?”

“If you want to change this country you can’t just sit around your house, yelling at the TV. You have to get out there and yell at a play,” she added.

Cue Meyers’ turn: “And really, if this portrayal was offensive to anyone, it’s Caesar. Caesar was beloved by the Roman Empire. To put it another way, he won the popular vote.”

The “Last Night” host went on say that free speech advocates can’t have it both ways.

“Also, this is really important. Free speech isn’t about just protecting speech you like. So if you think it is terrible to interrupt ‘Julius Caesar,’ you have to think it’s terrible to interrupt Ann Coulter even if you think she is terrible.”

“And she really is,” Poehler interjected.

“And sure, you can make the argument that she’s not Shakespeare,” Meyers concluded. “But if you shut her down, you give her power. And if you let her talk you’ll find she is much ado about nothing.”

“Transparent” is unlike anything else on TV, so it’s fitting that Our Lady J came on as the series’ first trans writer in an unconventional way.

Previously known as a singer-songwriter and classical pianist who’s worked with Lady Gaga, Debbie Harry and Cyndi Lauper, she applied for the gig when creator and show runner Jill Soloway made a concerted effort to hire trans writers for the show’s second season.

“I submitted a short story,” Our Lady J told TheWrap. “After that she selected six people to join a workshop on how to write for television because she’s a badass punk and wanted to train six trans people to write for TV, because she realized there was really a lack of opportunity in the community. After the workshop she asked if I would join the staff of ‘Transparent,’ to which I peed my pants, jumped up and down, screamed and threw a party and said, ‘Yes!'”

The winning story was about her childhood as a “little trans girl in an Amish community who meets an Amish boy who sees her for who she is,” Our Lady J shared. “That’s based on something that happened to me when I was young.”

She explored similar terrain in the Season 3 episode “If I Were a Bell,” which flashes back to Maura’s childhood in Boyle Hights, where her burgeoning trans identity clashes with her strict upbringing.

Our Lady J said she’s revisiting her past once again for a pilot she’s working on about a “trans girl in an Amish village.” “It’s an unusual project,” she says. “And there’s a lot of comedy there too.”

James Corden got creative in his pursuit to educate Donald Trump on HIV and AIDS: he sent the president 297 copies of “Philadelphia,” the 1993 Oscar winner starring Tom Hanks as a man who was fired from his law firm for having AIDS.

Upset with the news that six members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS resigned, Corden told his “Late Late Show” audience on Tuesday, “They resigned because as they put it, they said Donald Trump simply does not care about HIV and AIDS — and he doesn’t.”

“Most of what I know or when I started to learn or first hear about HIV and AIDS, I learned from the movie ‘Philadelphia,'” Corden said. “It was the first I had seen anything about this disease on television, and as I learned more, I started to care about it and I was thinking to that, I was thinking maybe that’s the problem here. Maybe Donald Trump doesn’t care because he’s never seen ‘Philadelphia.’ In fact, I’m almost certain that’s probably what it is.”

When attempts to send the film to Trump at the White House failed, Corden’s crew instead shipped the copies off to Mar-a-Lago, the resort Trump has called the “Winter White House.”

Corden said they sent 297 copies, to be exact, because it was “the most we could buy.”

“On the internet, we got 21 from Amazon, we got 210 from Barnes & Noble, we got 50 from another Barnes & Noble, we got 50 from another Barnes & Noble — oh, sorry, 16 from another Barnes & Noble. And where we could, we even spent the extra 14 cents per copy so the president could enjoy it on Blu-ray.”

The comedian also urged his viewers to send their “Philadelphia” copies to Trump.

“We hope that if Trump watches Philadelphia, he’ll understand two things: One, Tom Hanks definitely deserved that Oscar, and No. 2, we hope that he’ll realize that HIV and AIDS is something that you or any president of the United States, or any world leader for that matter, can never afford to ignore.”

CNN filed a lawsuit in federal court on Thursday seeking the FBI to turn over James Comey’s memos documenting his conversations with President Donald Trump.

The move comes a week after the former FBI Director testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee and described writing the memos as well as their contents, which date back to his first meeting with Trump in early January.

The lawsuit claims the FBI has yet to make the memos available or give reason for not doing so, despite the company filing of a Freedom of Information Act request.

“The public has a right to see them,” CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker said during a press event on Thursday.

“It’s in everybody’s interest and we are happy to take the lead on that, and we think that it’s in pursuit of the journalism that we do everyday. We think those should be part of the public record so we filed a suit this morning.”

The filing, released by CNN on its website, reads: “This is an action brought pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act for declaratory, injunctive, and other appropriate relief, seeking the immediate processing of CNN’s request to the FBI for records prepared by former FBI Director James B. Comey, Jr., that document his interactions with President Donald J. Trump, and the immediate release of those records.”

It goes on: “Despite the great urgency in informing the public about these records, and in absolute disregard for the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Information Policy’s decision directing the expedited processing of CNN’s request, the FBI has failed to respond to the request within the time required by the FOIA.”

In his testimony last week, Comey said he documented a series of private meetings with Trump that resulted in a series of nine memos initially only distributed to a small number of FBI colleagues. During the hearing, Comey revealed that he also gave the memos to a friend with the purpose of providing details to the media.

The leak resulted in The New York Times publishing a story on May 16 which included Comey’s account of a Feb. 14 meeting in the Oval Office. In it, he claims Trump urged him to shut down the FBI’s investigation of Michael Flynn.

Comey said his copies of the memos are now in the possession of the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, who is now investigating whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice, according to a report published by The Washington Post Wednesday.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post published a report claiming the FBI’s special counsel, Robert Mueller, is looking into whether the president tried to interfere with the bureau’s investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia.

Trump didn’t call out the paper directly in another tweet sent Thursday morning, but appeared to blast the news outlet, saying: “They made up a phony collusion with the Russians story, found zero proof, so now they go for obstruction of justice on the phone story. Nice.”

Trump’s lawyers made similar comments Wednesday.

“The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal,” said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump’s legal team.

The president has also continuously called the Russia probe a “witch hunt,” using the phrase in at least eight tweets since March.

Mueller took over the Russia probe in May after Trump fired James Comey. His decision to open an investigation, per the Washington Post, marks an expansion of Mueller’s ongoing probe into whether Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential race.

Even though Trump was told by former FBI Director James Comey earlier this year that he was not personally under investigation, officials told the Post that changed shortly after Comey’s firing.

Annapurna has released a new trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s “Detroit,” a historical, racially charged thriller about the 1967 riots in Motor City — “one of the most terrifying events in American history,” per the preview.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” breakout star John Boyega heads the cast as an African-American cop caught up in a tense standoff involving snipers, accidental shootings, rocks thrown and simmering racial tensions that boil over into violence. The fact-based drama is set in the summer of ’67, when police raided an unlicensed bar where dozens of African-Americans were celebrating the return of two soldiers from the Vietnam War.

After they attempted to arrest everyone present, hell broke loose, resulting in a five-day riot that remains one of the deadliest in U.S. history, with 43 killed and nearly 1,200 injured.

The film marks the third collaboration between Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal, who won an Oscar in 2010 for his screenplay for “The Hurt Locker” and received a nomination for his work on “Zero Dark Thirty.”

 Will Poulter (“The Revenant”), Jack Reynor (“Transformers: Age of Extinction”), and Anthony Mackie (“Captain America: Civil War”) co-star.

“Detroit” serves as the launch title for Annapurna’s new distribution division. Annapurna CEO Megan Ellison is producing the film with Bigelow, Boal, Colin Wilson and Matthew Budman.

The film is due in theaters on Aug. 4.
