"Awkward." is the name of MTV's latest scripted series and, yes, the period is in the title.
The added punctuation lets you know quickly that this show, about 15-year-old Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards of "One Tree Hill") whose high-school life becomes difficult after a misunderstanding, is for teenagers, and more specifically teenage girls, because anyone older would probably gripe that the period looks way out of place there.
MTV mentions "My So-Called Life" in its promotional material for "Awkward." but that doesn't seem like an adequate way to describe the far more light-hearted show. It feels more like the TV version of "Easy A."
