Benicio del Toro, a friend of Johnny Depp‘s, called Amber Heard “manipulative” and “twisted” over her claims that Depp has been physically abusive toward her.

“What I know, there’s a lot of trouble from the girl that sounds a little manipulative,” del Toro told the New York Daily News on Tuesday. “It sounds a little bit like there’s something really twisted about that girl … but I don’t know the specifics.”

Shortly after filing for divorce from Depp on May 23, Heard was granted a temporary restraining order, claiming domestic violence. The actress alleged that Depp had been abusive on multiple occasions during their 15-month marriage, notably on May 21 at the couple’s Los Angeles residence. Heard submitted multiple photos as evidence of the alleged abuse, including photos in which she appears to have marks around her eye.

Heard also filed a lawsuit against Doug Stanhope over a guest column that the comic published on TheWrap on May 29, in which Stanhope said that Heard was blackmailing her estranged husband.

Heard’s attorney later told TheWrap that the blackmailing claim was “unequivocally false.”

Del Toro called Depp “a nice guy, very caring, very smart,” further relating his skepticism over the allegations.

“It seems the fact that his mom passed away and she filed for divorce two days later and then she wants money and she’s saying she got hit, it’s almost like, wait, I saw them not too long ago,” he added. “Maybe it was January, a dinner for the Oscars or something like that. He was there with her and they were fine.”
