Ending a six-year run of classic rock stalwarts, the Black Eyed Peas will perform in the Super Bowl XLV halftime show on Feb. 6.
The NFL announced the group's appearance during the New Orleans Saints-Dallas Cowboys game Thursday. The Peas will be the first contemporary act since the Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake craziness of 2004.
The last six performers — Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and the Who — all had decades of hits with appeal for viewers of all ages.
The Peas have no such track record, but remain a reliable bet: Their string of recent No. 1 hits include "Boom Boom Pow," "I Gotta Feeling," and "Imma Be." Their latest album, "The Beginning," will be released Tuesday on Interscope Records.
The group previously played the Super Bowl pregame concert in 2005, and performed at the NFL season kickoff concert in 2009.
Super Bowl XLV will take place at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
