Kino Lorber has acquired all U.S. rights to "Meet the Fokkens" ("Ouwehoeren"), a documentary about two 69-year-old twins who began as prostitutes in Amsterdam's red-light district and rose to run their own brothel.
The deal was negotiated by Kino Lorber VP Elizabeth Sheldon and Autlook Films CEO Peter Jager, and closed by Kino Lorber chief Richard Lorber during the Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Gabrielle Provaas and Rob Schröder, "Meet the Fokkens" follows Louis and Martine Fokkens, familiar faces in Amsterdam brothels will soon leave the profession in which they have worked for 50 years.
"When I saw Louise and Martine on the big screen, I was charmed by their stories, their wry humor and their spirit," said Sheldon in a press release announcing the acquisition.
Kino Lorber plans to screen the film at the SilverDocs Film Festival in June, and to premiere it at the Film Forum in New York on August 8. It will expand the film into major theatrical markets in September and October.
