After a successful run last year at the Duke on 42nd Street, DeLappe’s “The Wolves” now performs at LCT’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, where it opened Monday, with Lila Neugebauer again at the helm as director and most of the cast repeating their stellar performances.

DeLappe is young enough to have started playing soccer at the age of 8, but for a much older generation of Americans, the concept of school sports is almost purely male. I attended two high schools back in the late 1960s. One offered only girls’ basketball, the other offered no competitive sports whatsoever for women.

For those older theatergoers, which is just about everybody who goes to the theater in New York City, that pathetic sports history will inform every exhilarating, painful moment of revelation in “The Wolves.”

DeLappe is a wonderful chronicler of the present-day mindset of teenagers, especially young women who find themselves at a crucial intersection in life where intense competition and equally magnetic empathy are doing constant battle for the human soul.

Neugebauer takes DeLappe’s script to deliver one of the most arresting first scenes of a play in memory. Nine female members of the soccer team form a circle to do their stretches, all the while carrying on a dizzying, truly surreal conversation that’s the polar opposite of Stephen King’s girls’ locker room scene in his 1974 debut novel, “Carrie.”

Rather than being demonically lewd, DeLappe’s young women engaged in a matter-of-fact discussion about their periods, ranging from menstrual synchrony to a religious debate on Tampons versus pads; it’s a talk that also manages to touch on Harry Potter, the internet in China, their coach looking wasted behind sunglasses on Saturdays, and the Khmer Rouge.

That final topic is a bit of a shocker, since, as everyone over 30 knows, teenagers aren’t supposed to know or care anything about the world beyond their next text message. It’s a harsh slap to the Lincoln Center audience, and to its credit, “The Wolves” is youth-affirming to the extreme. (The play also shows that teenagers can put away their iPhones when they have something really important to do, like winning next week’s game.)

In that marvelous first scene, Neugebauer orchestrates the initial rapid-fire outbursts of conversation so that we pick up only snatches of words and miss at least half of what’s being said. At this point in the play, the teenagers themselves are also a bit of a blur — long hair is braided or rolled up for minimal interference with their sport; all the bodies are rendered nearly identical in black-and-white uniforms. Even the Playbill credits don’t give the characters’ names but rather the numerals on their respective trunks and tops.

Like their male counterparts in high school, these players are out to win, not seduce. They’re doers, not cheerleaders. There’s a reason they call themselves the Wolves and not the Gazelles.

If “The Wolves” is ever made into a movie, it will end with one of those fast-forward looks into the future, wherein a scroll gives us a sentence or two about what happens to each of the players a decade or two from now. Those bios would be a mistake.

The beauty of DeLappe’s writing is her ability to pinpoint that very moment in life when a number of 16- and 17-year-olds learn that life is unconscionably unfair but they’ll survive (or, at least, most of them will).

Offstage, a talent scout asks to see three of the girls after a game. It’s a devastating moment for those who aren’t called, not unlike the last scene in “A Chorus Line.” New to the game of soccer, #46 (Tedra Millan displaying a wonderfully quirky insouciance) is one of the players chosen to meet the scout.

So how do the other more experienced, dedicated players cope? Will they work harder? Give up and run for homecoming queen instead? Or sink into the premature bitterness that there’s nothing special about them? Those life-defining questions permeate “The Wolves,” but remain unresolved because the answers are locked away in a nebulous future.

Very right now is the character of #00, the goalie, played by Lizzy Jutila, the cast’s one new member. After being chosen to meet with the talent scout, she runs offstage to the locker room, unlike #46 and #14 (Simia Finnerty) who confab with the other girls about what the scout told them, everyone’s empathy and competition spilling out all over the AstroTurf. Later, in almost total silence, #00 exercises relentlessly. Is this an outburst of self-improvement or torture or both? DeLappe knows that at this point in life everything is a fate unknowable.

Other actors in the cast are Paola Sanchez Abreu, Mia Barron, Brenna Coates, Jenna Dioguardi, Sarah Mezzanotte, and Susannah Perkins, who manages to be especially luminous on a team of all-stars.

Charlie Rose Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Eight Women https://www.thewrap.com/charlie-rose-accused-sexual-misconduct-eight-women/ https://www.thewrap.com/charlie-rose-accused-sexual-misconduct-eight-women/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 22:09:06 +0000 Jon Levine https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743610 Television icon Charlie Rose has become the latest media star to be accused of sexual misconduct, with eight women telling the Washington Post that the longtime PBS newsman made unwanted sexual advances towards them while they were employees or sought work.

“It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior,” Rose told the Post. “I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that,” he said, adding: “I have learned a great deal as a result of these events, and I hope others will too. All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of the pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to a profound new respect for women and their lives.”

Rose also questioned the accuracy of the accusations waged against him.

The host, who also anchors “CBS This Morning,” did not immediately respond to request for comment from TheWrap.

The women who have accused him of sexual misconduct, some of whom are anonymous, say that between the 1990s and 2011 Rose groped and engaged in other nonconsensual behavior and would often walk around nude in front of them.

Megan Creydt, who served as a show coordinator in 2005, said Rose made an awelcomed pass at her in a car.

“It was quite early in working there that he put his hand on my mid-thigh,” Creydt told the Post. “I tensed up. I didn’t move his hand off, but I pulled my legs to the other side of the car. I tried not to get in a car with him ever again. I think he was testing me out.”

Rose is the latest in what has become a nearly daily torrent of powerful men in media, Hollywood and politics who have seen their reputations (and likely careers) implode in the wake of lurid allegations. Just today, news emerged that The New York Times would suspend their star political reporter Glenn Thrush over misconduct charges.

Fox News Gets ‘Workplace Professionalism and Inclusion Council’ After Multiple Sex Scandals https://www.thewrap.com/fox-news-workplace-professionalism-inclusion-council-sex-scandals/ https://www.thewrap.com/fox-news-workplace-professionalism-inclusion-council-sex-scandals/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 20:18:23 +0000 Tony Maglio https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743504 After numerous sex scandals rocked Fox News, parent company 21st Century Fox is installing a “Workplace Professionalism and Inclusion Council” to watch-over the cable news net. Most members of the committee will be independent of Fox, per the publicly traded corporation.

The council will regularly provide written reports to the 21st Century board. Those will be posted publicly to the company’s website.

More specifically, the new committee will “advise Fox News and its senior management in its ongoing efforts to ensure a proper workplace environment for all employees and guests, strengthen reporting practices for wrongdoing, enhance HR training on workplace behavior, and further recruitment and advancement of women and minorities,” per a Monday media release.

“The Workplace Council gives our management team access to a brain trust of experts with deep and diverse experiences in workplace issues,” said Jack Abernethy, co-president of Fox News Channel. “We look forward to benefiting from their collective guidance.”

“We are pleased to have resolved this matter with 21CF in a constructive way that will drive meaningful benefits for shareholders of 21CF and Fox News employees,” said Max Berger, founding partner, Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann LLP. “The establishment of a majority independent council with the participation of senior HR executives from the company is a positive result that reflects a shared commitment from both sides to strengthen the workplace at Fox News.”

Over this past year, 21st Century Fox appointed a new global chief Human Resources officer, Thomas Gaissmaier, and a new head of Human Resources at Fox News, Kevin Lord. Both will be members of the new council, with Gaissmaier serving as chairperson.

All of these changes came about after former Fox News boss Roger Ailes was accused of sexually harassing numerous women, most notably Gretchen Carlson, whom he is pictured with above. Earlier this year, anchor Bill O’Reilly was ousted from the network following similar allegations. Charles Payne, Sean Hannity and others have also been accused of sexual misconduct on the job.

The council’s four independent members are:

Honorable Barbara Jones, former judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, she runs a practice on corporate monitorships, compliance issues, internal investigations and arbitrations and mediations. Judge Jones chaired the Response Systems to Adult Sexual Assault Crimes Panel, created by Congress in the National Defense Authorization Act for 2013, aimed at assessing the investigation, prosecution and adjudication of sexual assaults in the military.

Brande Stellings, who leads Catalyst’s consulting services and corporate board services groups, guides organizations to accelerate the advancement of women through the pipeline to leadership.

Virgil Smith, who served as Vice President of Talent Acquisition and Diversity at the Gannett Company, is currently Principal Consultant of the Smith Edwards Group, LLC, and consultant for the Asian American Journalists Association.

Sylvia Ann Hewlett, PhD economist, Kennedy Scholar, Founder and CEO of the Center for Talent Innovation, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She has published 12 books and 14 Harvard Business Review articles.

Monday marks Biden’s 75th birthday, and Obama wished him well on Twitter by creating his own meme to mark the occasion. You’ve probably seen the photos with imagined captions of what the two former leaders were saying to each other. Biden even shared some of his favorites with AOL over the weekend, saying “in essence, they’re all true.”

Obama’s birthday meme features a photo of him speaking at a microphone, looking pretty serious, while Biden sits in the background pointing and smiling at someone off-camera. He accompanied the photo with the requisite formula, getting it exactly right:

“ME: Joe, about halfway through the speech, I’m gonna wish you a happy birth–

BIDEN: IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!

ME: Joe.”

And the former POTUS capped it off with a genuine birthday wish: “Happy birthday to @JoeBiden, my brother and the best vice president anybody could have.”

Ratings: AMAs Match Last Year’s All-Time Low, Get Crushed by NFL Football https://www.thewrap.com/amas-american-music-awards-sunday-night-football-ratings/ https://www.thewrap.com/amas-american-music-awards-sunday-night-football-ratings/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 16:53:00 +0000 Tony Maglio and Jennifer Maas https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743303 Breaking: Americans are still much more into football than pop music. Sunday’s American Music Awards show tied 2016’s all-time low rating among adults 18-49, but the ABC show was able to grow its overall audience by 10 percent year over year.

It was nowhere near enough to tackle NBC’s primetime pigskin, however — not that anyone thought it would be.

Packing a particularly strong “Sunday Night Football” game, NBC finished first in ratings with a 5.1 rating/17 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 15.7 million, according to preliminary numbers.

The network’s “Football Night in America” and the Philadelphia Eagles destruction of the Dallas Cowboys combined for those gaudy Nielsen numbers.

ABC was second in ratings with a 2.0/7 and third in viewers with 7.7 million. “The Toy Box” season final at 7 p.m. managed a 0.6/2 and 3.5 million viewers. Across the rest of primetime, the “American Music Awards” averaged a 2.4/7 and 9 million viewers.

CBS was third in ratings with a 1.5/5 and second in viewers with 9 million. An NFL overrun at 7 scored a 4.4/16 and 17.3 million viewers. At 7:30, the first half-hour of “60 Minutes” put up a 2.4/8 and 12.7 million viewers.

The back 30 minutes dipped to a 1.6/5 and 10.3 million viewers. At 8:30, the first half-hour of “Wisdom of the Crowd” had 0.9/3 and 6.6 million viewers, while the second got a 0.7/2 and 6 million viewers. At the 10 p.m. hour, the conclusion of “NCIS: LA” and the start of “Madam Secretary” combined for a 0.7/2 and 6.4 million viewers

Fox was fourth in ratings with a 0.9/3 and in viewers with 2.1 million. After a rerun, “Bob’s Burgers” at 7:30 had a 1.1/4 and 2.4 million viewers. At 8, “The Simpsons” received a 1.1/4 and 2.7 million viewers. “Ghosted” at 8:30 got 0.8/3 and 2 million viewers. At 9, “Family Guy” rose from its lead-in to a 0.9/3 and 2.1 million viewers. “The Last Man on Earth” at 9:30 settled for a 0.7/2 and 1.6 million viewers.

Univision was fifth in ratings with a 0.6/2 and in viewers with 1.8 million.

Telemundo was sixth in ratings with a 0.3/1 and in viewers with 806,000.

The CW doesn’t nationally program Sunday nights.

Paris Hilton Claims to Have Invented the Selfie and People Are Freaking https://www.thewrap.com/paris-hilton-selfie-invent/ https://www.thewrap.com/paris-hilton-selfie-invent/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 16:01:30 +0000 Jon Levine https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743260 On Sunday, Paris Hilton claimed credit for inventing the selfie.

The heiress and occasional media figure also gave an assist to her famous friend Britney Spears.

“11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!”

Quite the claim.

Twitter, however, promptly did some fact checking, showing evidence of selfies going back 100 years. In fact, the first known camera selfie — then just known as the more banal self-portrait —  dates back to 1839.

The Hilton claim was so breathtaking, it caused a firestorm on Twitter — that is still raging. Even BBC couldn’t resist some trolling.

Al Franken (D-Minnesota) faces a second claim of sexual misconduct, this time by a woman once who is accusing the senator of grabbing her inappropriately during a photo op in 2010.

Lindsay Menz told CNN that Franken grabbed her behind while they were snapping a photo together at the Minnesota State Fare in 2010, in a story published Monday. At the time, Franken had been in the Senate for two years.

Menz told CNN that Franken “pulled me in really close, like awkward close, and as my husband took the picture, he put his hand full-fledged on my rear,” Menz said.”It was wrapped tightly around my butt cheek.”

Menz said the “brazen” move lasted three to four seconds: “I was like, ‘Oh, my God, what’s happening?'” Menz’s husband corroborated her account to CNN.

In a statement given to CNN on Monday, Franken said he didn’t remember taking the photo with Menz. “I take thousands of photos at the state fair surrounded by hundreds of people, and I certainly don’t remember taking this picture,” Franken said. “I feel badly that Ms. Menz came away from our interaction feeling disrespected.”

“You just feel gross,” Menz told CNN of the experience, which she decided to come forward about following Tweeden’s public accusations. “Like, eww, I want to wash that off of me.”

However, Menz told CNN she was not comparing her experience to that of former model and L.A. radio host Leeann Tweeden, who came forward last Thrusday to accuse the former “Saturday Night Live” star and comedian of kissing and groping her without consent during a USO tour in 2006.

You can see the photo in question in the tweet below.

Kesha to Join Old Crow Medicine Show on ‘CMT Crossroads’ (Exclusive) https://www.thewrap.com/kesha-old-crow-medicine-show-cmt-crossroads/ https://www.thewrap.com/kesha-old-crow-medicine-show-cmt-crossroads/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 15:00:51 +0000 Tony Maglio https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1742409 It’s going down/CMT’s yellin’ “Timber!”: Kesha is set to join Grammy Award-winning Americana band Old Crow Medicine Show on an upcoming episode of “CMT Crossroads,” TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The December episode will tape in Nashville — which is home to both artists — and feature performances of each other’s biggest songs, including hits from Kesha’s latest No. 1 album “Rainbow” and Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel.”

“I grew up on country music, it was the first music I sang, listened to, and wrote as a child, and I’m especially stoked to be collaborating with Old Crow Medicine Show,” Kesha said. “I’ve always admired early country artists such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Gram Parsons, and Loretta Lynn, and the outlaw attitude of some of those early country artists who helped create rock and roll. To me, Old Crow Medicine Show epitomizes that attitude and wildness while also being amazing songwriters and performers.”

“Old Crow is so excited to be working with Kesha on this project,” added band member Ketch Secor. “Through our nearly 20 years of performing together our band has enjoyed many different kinds of musical collaborations, but this will be our first time working together with a pop star. We love Kesha’s style and we’re all looking forward to what we’ll come up with together.”

The series has showcased musical partnerships including Elvis Costello and Lucinda Williams, Kid Rock and Hank Williams, Jr., Ray Charles and Travis Tritt, Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris, Bon Jovi and Sugarland, Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire, Def Leppard and Taylor Swift, Sting and Vince Gill, John Mayer and Keith Urban, Steven Tyler and Carrie Underwood, Stevie Nicks and Lady Antebellum, Katy Perry and Kacey Musgraves, Alicia Keys and Maren Morris, and the Backstreet Boys and Florida Georgia Line.

“CMT Crossroads” is produced by CMT’s Margaret Comeaux and Switched On Entertainment’s John Hamlin.

The Kesha/Old Crow Medicine Show episode airs Wednesday, December 6 at 10/9c on CMT.

Some artists would die for their craft — Pink risked exactly that to present “Beautiful Trauma” for Sunday’s AMAs.

Repelling from the top of a skyscraper, the pop star and a handful of dancers performed while hanging off the side of the building. Their aerials and her vocals were pretty incredible given the situation — absolutely no one would have faulted Pink for lip-syncing this one.

The whole thing resulted in an unforgettable American Music Awards moment, and some darn good advertising for the JW Marriott — you know, especially since they all lived to accept the applause from (far) below.

Watch the video above, and try to remember to breathe.

Charles Manson Dead at 83 https://www.thewrap.com/charles-manson-dead-83/ https://www.thewrap.com/charles-manson-dead-83/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 06:12:27 +0000 Debbie Emery and Tim Molloy https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1427191 Charles Manson, the career con man and criminal who led the Manson Family murders that claimed seven lives, including that of a nine-months-pregnant Sharon Tate, has died. He was 83.

Using the hippie counterculture to lure followers, and incorporating the music of the Beatles into his massacres, Manson masterminded the murders that chilled the summer of 1969.

He was hospitalized last week after being transferred from Corcoran State Prison, about 60 miles outside Bakersfield, California, where he was serving nine concurrent life sentences. He died of natural causes Sunday at a Kern County hospital, according to a California Department of Corrections statement provided to The Associated Press.

Manson’s followers went on a violent rampage in 1969, coining the phrase “Helter Skelter” from the Beatles song, committing nine murders at four locations over a period of five weeks.

The most notorious — and the most gruesome — was the butchering of Tate, the wife of director Roman Polanski.

While the killings were all carried out by his followers, Manson was found guilty in 1971 of conspiracy in relation to seven of the killings and has been behind bars ever since.

He was fascinated by pop culture, and how he could exploit it — and celebrities — to make his own myth. Pop culture, in turn, became fascinated by him: He inspired TV shows like “Aquarius,” “Manson’s Lost Girls” and “Helter Skelter,” gave Marilyn Manson half of his stage name, and is expected to be a significant part of Quentin Tarantino’s next film.

U2’s Bono began the group’s 1987 “Helter Skelter” cover by declaring, “This is a song Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We’re stealin’ it back.” Guns N’ Roses took heat in 1993 for their macabre decision to cover a little-known composition by Manson, an unsuccessful songwriter, called “Look at Your Game, Girl.”

Born in 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to an unmarried 16-year-old, Manson had an alcoholic mother and absent father. According to Mansion lore, his mother once sold him for a pitcher of beer to a childless waitress, from whom his uncle retrieved him days later.

His teenage years included arrests for burglary and shoplifting leading to his first imprisonment in October 1951.

After a series of other crimes, arrests, incarcerations, a marriage, divorce and the birth of his son, Charles Jr., Manson moved to San Francisco and established himself as a guru during the 1967 Summer of Love, at which time he strongly implied that he was Christ and recalled visions on the cross with nails in his hands and feet.

Once he migrated his growing group of followers down to Los Angeles and onto the Spahn Movie Ranch, Manson picked up some famous friends, including producers Phil Kaufman and Gary Stromberg, and Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, even moving 12 of his followers into the musician’s Pacific Palisades mansion. Before he ultimately evicted them, Wilson also paid for studio time to record songs written and performed by Manson.

Manson’s most infamous followers included Charles Watson, Bobby Beausoleil, Mary Brunner, Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten, Steve “Clem” Grogan, Linda Kasabian and Patricia Krenwinkel.

As his grip over them increased and the era of Helter Skelter escalated, the Manson Family went on to carry out a grisly killing spree in August 1969 under his instruction (and mind-altering drugs) that included the Crowe shooting, the Hinman murder, the Tate murders and the LaBianca murders. Along with violently butchering their victims, the words “Rise,” “Death to pigs”  and “Healter [sic] Skelter” were written in blood on the crime scene walls.

Key members of the Manson Family were finally arrested after a detailed LAPD investigation leading to the high profile trial that began in June 1970, with prosecutors arguing that Manson’s main motive was to spark social chaos.

During the penalty phrase, the cult leader told reporters: “I am the Devil, and the Devil always has a bald head.”

Manson and three of his followers were handed death sentences after being found guilty of 27 offenses, but they were all commuted to life in prison in 1972 when the death penalty was abolished in California.

9 Things You Didn’t See on TV From the New England Patriots v Oakland Raiders in Mexico City https://www.thewrap.com/new-england-patriots-oakland-raiders-mexico-city-what-you-didnt-see-on-tv/ https://www.thewrap.com/new-england-patriots-oakland-raiders-mexico-city-what-you-didnt-see-on-tv/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 02:22:17 +0000 Debbie Emery https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743153 Trump’s dreams of building a wall didn’t stop NFL fans from flooding to Mexico City this weekend, as the New England Patriots took on the Oakland Raiders at Estadio Azteca Stadium.

It was the first trip south of the border for Tom Brady and co., while the Raiders — who treated it as a home game — were down there last year against the Houston Texans.

While most viewers watched from home or in sports bars via CBS, TheWrap ventured down to Mexico City for the historic game.

Here are nueve (nine) things you didn’t see on TV.

1. The fans are manic in Mexico, and we mean that in the best possible way! The weekend’s festivities kicked off at the NFL Fan Fest in Zocalo Square. Supporters of all teams across the league posed with giant helmets, running a 50-yard dash, or checking out the Lombardi Trophy.

2. “Black-ish” actor Anthony Anderson was among those who made the trip from California to cheer on the Raiders. He was spotted at the Intercontinental Hotel the night before the game posing for photos with fans.

3. The Mexican Wave is a real thing — and it is so much more exuberant when done in Mexico by genuine Mexicans.

4. These fans know their stuff when it comes to the NFL. There was no confused looks during complicated plays or lengthy drives, and they were nearly all decked out in jersey, hats and insane regalia — even the little kids. Oh yeah, we also saw Darth Vader — turns out he’s a Raiders fan.

5. The game was 100 percent and international experience — with the national anthems of both countries being sung before the game, as the U.S. and Mexican flags were laid on the field and fireworks exploded above.

6. At 7,380 feet above sea level, Azteca Stadium is 2,100 feet higher than Denver’s Mile High Stadium, which is why the Patriots spent the week practicing in Colorado Springs. Despite mountains of bottled water being found everywhere, New England cornerback Stephon Gilmore and wide receiver Danny Amendola were both sidelined for dehydration. Fortunately Amendola had already scored a beautiful touchdown from Brady and had thrown the ball into the stands.

7. Concessions are definitely different in Mexico! Hot dogs and burgers could be found, along with Mexican beer, of course. But also on offer were hot peppers with lime, street tacos — and most bizarrely — cup o’ noodles with lime wedges. Up in the press box, members of the media were fed traditional chicken rolls.

8. Security couldn’t have been tighter both at the game and before. Airport-style metal detectors checked everyone entering both team hotels in the Polanco area of Mexico City. On game day morning, armed guards protected the players as they got on the buses for the stadium. Patriots owner Robert Kraft was escorted to his private car by security detail, while SWAT teams holding machine guns watched from the back of Jeeps.

9. The halftime didn’t quite rival a Super Bowl show, but it was pretty damn impressive. A collection of rescue workers — human and canine — took to the field in formation as the letters M-E-X-I-C-O were spelled out in remembrance of the 468 people who were killed in the recent earthquakes. The crowd was asked to raise a fist in a moment of silence to honor the victims.

Two things that were shown on TV but still have to be mentioned are the fact that the Patriots blew away the Raiders with a 33-8 victory, despite them having struggled in altitude in the past. And New England kicker Stephen Gostkowski set a new career high with a 62-yard field goal. However, the altitude could have helped with that, as the thin air makes it easier for the ball to travel further.

WWE ‘Survivor Series': Watch The Shield Triple Power-Bomb Kofi Kingston From the Ropes (Video) https://www.thewrap.com/wwe-survivor-series-shield-new-day/ https://www.thewrap.com/wwe-survivor-series-shield-new-day/#respond Mon, 20 Nov 2017 00:44:20 +0000 Tony Maglio https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743170 It’s a new day, yes it is. Three-man WWE tag-team The New Day did not survive the opening match of Sunday’s “Survivor Series.”

Fellow threesome The Shield just dropped the opposing trio — some members from greater heights than others.

The “Monday Night Raw” representatives conquered the “SmackDown Live” one in pretty killer fashion — just ask Kofi Kingston’s back. And neck. And whomever will have to help him walk to and from the bathroom tonight.

Watch the recently reunited Shield — Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose — triple power-bomb the most athletic member of The New Day from off the middle rope:

Yeah, ouch. For those keeping score at home, that’s 1-0 in favor of “Raw.” The traditional “Survivor Series” five-on-five women’s elimination match is up next on the WWE Network pay-per-view.

TheWrap asked Lynch what she sees as the next progession towards in-ring equality. Many squared-circle enthusiasts believe a women’s match headlining “WrestleMania” is the ultimate “made it” moment, so we specifically asked the first-ever SmackDown Women’s Champion to steer clear of that one in her answer.

“Sometimes I feel like there is a perception, and maybe I’m wrong, maybe this is just my own opinion and my own feelings, that it’s like, ‘Oh, we’ve already seen the women. We’re already had a women’s match,'” Lynch told TheWrap. “Well, why does that matter? We don’t say, ‘We’ve already seen Braun Strowman, we don’t need to see Kane. We’ve already seen a heavyweight.'”

“It doesn’t just always need to be one match, or one segment, or two segments, or three segments — like, why not have 75 percent of the show one week be all women?” she continued. “And why not have women’s tag team titles, why not have a women’s Royal Rumble?”

(Here, Lynch suggested starting with traveling women’s tag titles that move between her “SmackDown” and WWE’s flagship series, “Raw.” Smart.)

“Of course, the answer to that would be, ‘Well, we don’t have enough women,'” the fiery-haired grappler whose real name is Rebecca Quin, answered for herself. “But right now — now is a better time than ever. We’ve had the ‘Mae Young Classic’ — there’s proven to be a huge amount of talented women, of passionate women out there. And we’ve got a lot in (WWE’s developmental league) NXT. I think right now at the Performance Center [in Orlando, Florida] there’s currently 30 women training, which is huge. That’s more than we’ve ever had.”

At TheWrap, we endorse each of Lynch’s ideas.

Click here to read more from our conversation with the master of the Bexploder and Dis-Arm-Her, during which she just-as-thoughtfully broke down why I, a total stranger, like her fellow WWE Superstar and countryman Sheamus so much.

PPV “Survivor Series” kicks off this Sunday at 7 p.m. ET on WWE Network.

Russell Simmons Says Encounter With 17-Year-Old Model Was ‘Completely Consensual’ https://www.thewrap.com/russell-simmons-keri-claussen-khalighi-sexual-assault-response/ https://www.thewrap.com/russell-simmons-keri-claussen-khalighi-sexual-assault-response/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 17:22:59 +0000 Jeremy Fuster https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1743081 Russell Simmons responded on Sunday to a Los Angeles Times article in which model Keri Claussen Khalighi said the Def Jam producer sexually assaulted her when she was 17 while movie producer Brett Ratner watched. Simmons confirmed that he and Khalighi encountered each other in 1991, but said that everything that happened was “completely consensual.”

“We spent time in my apartment over a period of two days and one night, as well as at some public places including Nell’s Nightclub,” Simmons said in a statement. “Much of the time we were in the presence of other acquaintances. I’m deeply saddened and truly shocked to learn of Keri’s assertions as to what happened over the course of that weekend.”

In the LA Times report, Khalighi said that Simmons invited her to dinner with Ratner, who at the time was a music video director and Simmons’ protege. She says Simmons took her back to his apartment to show her a music video they were working on, but when they arrived, he made aggressive advances towards her. She struggled as Simmons undressed her, but eventually acquiesced and gave him oral sex.

“I looked over at Brett and said ‘help me’ and I’ll never forget the look on his face,” she recalled. “In that moment, the realization fell on me that they were in it together.”

The article also outlines Ratner and Simmons’ long relationship and notes that their conduct together has been investigated by authorities, namely in 2001, when police investigated claims from a woman who said she was sexually abused and held against her will at Ratner’s Beverly Hills home. Ratner, who was accused of sexual harassment in an earlier LA Times piece, has stepped down from day-to-day operations as head of his production banner, Ratpac Entertainment, with Warner Bros. severing ties with him.

Simmons says that he has been a longtime supporter of women’s rights, saying that “Abusing women in any way shape or form violates the very core of my being.”

“I have always spoken out regarding my life experiences, women’s issues and the need to bring a faster and more decisive shift in the collective consciousness that will help bring about true women’s equality,” he said.  “More than anything, I want my daughters to live in a more equal world and a world where they will not become victims of sexual harassment.”

Read Simmons’ full statement below:

As a long-time social activist, I have applauded the strength of the brave men and women who have spoken out over the past month and made their voices heard regarding sexual assault and harassment. I am a supporter of the #MeToo campaign and the victims who were previously terrified to stand up and speak out against sexual misconduct. I completely and unequivocally deny the horrendous allegations of non-consensual sex against me with every fiber of my being.

I know Keri Claussen Khalighi and remember the weekend in 1991 that she has referenced. Everything that happened between us 26 years ago was completely consensual and with Keri’s full participation. We spent time in my apartment over a period of two days and one night, as well as at some public places including Nell’s Nightclub. Much of the time we were in the presence of other acquaintances. I’m deeply saddened and truly shocked to learn of Keri’s assertions as to what happened over the course of that weekend.

Let me be crystal clear and very direct. Abusing women in any way shape or form violates the very core of my being. I have always spoken out regarding my life experiences, women’s issues and the need to bring a faster and more decisive shift in the collective consciousness that will help bring about true women’s equality. More than anything, I want my daughters to live in a more equal world and a world where they will not become victims of sexual harassment.

The LA Times article also references an allegation by Ms. Tanya Reid. I mean no disrespect to her at all when I say I honestly do not recall my telephone conversation with a hotel front desk clerk from over a quarter-century ago.

Dunham apologized Saturday for not supporting Perrineau, saying she was “absolutely wrong” for accusing her of submitting a false report.

“Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship to the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case,” Dunham tweeted.

After Perrineau went to police Friday, Dunham cast doubt on her account.

“While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3% of assault cases that are misreported every year,” Dunham said through a spokesperson Friday.

But backlash came quickly. She was called a “hypocrite” — among other things — for contradicting her comments from August when she said “women don’t lie about rape.”

Read Dunham’s apology below:

“As feminists, we live and die by our politics, and believing women is the first choice we make every single day when we wake up. Therefore I never thought I would issue a statement publically supporting someone accused of sexual assault, but I naively believed it was important to share my perspective on my friend’s situation as it has transpired behind the scenes over the last few months.

I now understand that it was absolutely wrong to come forward with such a statement and I am so sorry. We have been given the gift of powerful voices and by speaking out we were putting our thumb on the scale and it was wrong. We regret this decision with every fiber of our being.

Every woman who comes forward deserves to be heard, fully and completely, and our relationship to the accused should not be part of the calculation anyone makes when examining her case. Every person and every feminist should be required to hear her. Under patriarchy, “I believe you” is essential. Until we are all believed, none of us will be believed. We apologize to any women who have been disappointed.”

According to TMZ, Cassidy was rushed to a Florida hospital a few days ago and his condition has been rapidly declining. Their source tells them that the former teen heartthrob’s kidneys are failing and that he needs a liver transplant soon or he could die.

In February, Cassidy made public his battle with dementia and announced he would retire from touring as a musician to concentrate on his health.

“I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming,” Cassidy said in an interview with People Magazine, adding that his mother and grandfather had also suffered from the degenerative brain disease.

In an appearance on “Dr. Phil” shortly thereafter, Cassidy told his son,”I want you to promise me you’ll find a way to let me go and don’t let me live like that,” so that the singer doesn’t succumb to the disease like his mother did.

“When friends or family members ask you, ‘Remember, I just told you this two days ago?’ and there’s no memory of it … that’s when I began to be very concerned,” Cassidy told McGraw.

He was 64.

“It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of Malcolm Young, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother,” the statement on the band’s website reads. “Malcolm had been suffering from Dementia for several years and passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside.”

“Renowned for his musical prowess Malcolm was a songwriter, guitarist, performer, producer and visionary who inspired many,” it continued. “From the outset, he knew what he wanted to achieve and, along with his younger brother, took to the world stage giving their all at every show. Nothing less would do for their fans.”

Young and his brother Angus formed the Australian heavy metal band AC/DC in 1973 and two years later released their first album, “High Voltage,” followed by “Powerage” and “Highway to Hell.” Malcolm remained with the band until 2014, when he retired to receive treatment for dementia.

Shortly thereafter, The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Young was admitted to a nursing home for full-time care. A source close to the family told The Herald, “If you were in the room with [Malcolm Young] and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory.”

Before Young’s retirement, AC/DC sold more than 200 million albums. In 2003, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Young is survived by his wife O’Linda, children Cara and Ross, son-in-law Josh, three grandchildren, sister and brother.

Bill Maher Says Al Franken Doesn’t Deserve ‘to Be Lumped’ in With Weinstein ‘or Donald Trump’ https://www.thewrap.com/bill-maher-al-franken-doesnt-deserve-to-be-lumped-in-with-donald-trump/ https://www.thewrap.com/bill-maher-al-franken-doesnt-deserve-to-be-lumped-in-with-donald-trump/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 04:40:35 +0000 Rosemary Rossi https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1742837

Bill Maher didn’t shy away from talking about his friend Sen. Al Franken on Friday night’s “Real Time,” saying that the Minnesota Democrat “did a bad thing,” but doesn’t deserve the level of condemnation he’s receiving.

“Al’s a friend, but Al, I gotta to tell you, if you write a comedy sketch where you, Al Franken, kisses a model and her next line of dialogue isn’t ‘Get off of me, creepy!’ it’s not comedy; it’s science fiction.”

Maher agreed that Franken “did a bad thing” and the criticism he’s received has been universal. But, the HBO host said, “What he doesn’t deserve is to be lumped in with Roy Moore! Or Kevin Spacey! Or Harvey Weinstein! Or Donald Trump!”

Thursday, radio host and model Leeann Tweeden said Sen. Franken kissed and groped her without her consent while they both worked on a USO Tour of the Middle East in 2006. Franken offered his “sincerest apologies” — which Tweeden accepted.

Maher pitched the idea of another #MeToo campaign: “I can tell two unlike things apart. #MeToo!” he said.

“I know the difference between a man who once acted like a d–k and a man who is a d–k. MeToo!” he explained. “I know the difference between someone who behaved like a high-schooler and someone who targeted a high-schooler. MeToo!”

The topic didn’t end with his monologue. Mid-show guest Chelsea Handler also weighed in.

“I agree with you on Al Franken. I’m sorry, he’s not a predator. We all know it,” she said. “He made a mistake. Absolutely. But he’s not a predator.”

Watch Maher’s monologue above.

A Secret Pro-Trump Message Was Hidden on a ‘Transformers’ Toy https://www.thewrap.com/transformers-toy-carries-a-secret-message-make-america-great-again/ https://www.thewrap.com/transformers-toy-carries-a-secret-message-make-america-great-again/#respond Sat, 18 Nov 2017 00:57:53 +0000 Phil Hornshaw https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1742704 The “Transformers” franchise is known for many things: catch phrases, like “Autobots, roll out”; garish Michael Bay movies; the battle between good and evil robots who can turn into various kinds of vehicles. One thing it is not known for is full-throated support for Donald Trump’s polarizing agenda.

Until now.

As io9 reports, one eagle-eyed Twitter user discovered this week that the acronym MAGA – shorthand for Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again” — somehow ended up hidden on one of Hasbro’s new “Power of the Primes” Transformers toy line.

The message, found on a toy of the classic character Jazz, was somewhat cleverly disguised by being written in extremely small letters in Cybertronian, the fictional language of the Transformers from their home planet, Cybertron. See it below, just before the insignia of the good-guy Autobots.

The lettering is so small causal observers wouldn’t even notice, and they’re also pretty hard to make out. But Cybertronian characters used in “Transformers” movies and cartoons are well-known to hardcore fans and available online in wikis and other resources, and so it is that another Twitter user took a stab at the translation, though, and discovered the four characters on the car spelled out Trump’s famous slogan: “MAGA.”

Apparently, it’s the real deal, and it’s no accident.

“It was brought to our attention that a graphic appears on one of our Transformers figures that, when translated from Cybertonian letters to English, spells out MAGA,” Hasbro said in a statement to io9. “We investigated the issue, and discovered that one of our vendors inserted this as part of the design without authorization. We are addressing this with the vendor.

“We do not intend for our products to carry political messages, and apologize to anyone who was offended by this message.”

So it seems Hasbro has the issue in hand, but one has to wonder what the Trump supporter working at the unnamed vendor’s master plan was. If the hope was to secretly sway kids into supporting Trump, this hidden message involves kind of a lot of steps. First, the kids have to recognize that the super-small characters on the car are Cybertronian; then they have to make them out, which itself is pretty difficult; then they have to go online and translate then; and then they have to like Jazz, the break-dancing Transformer, enough to internalize the message.

Not really the most effective way to inspire the next generation of Decepticons.

Jameis Winston Groping Accusation Under Investigation by NFL https://www.thewrap.com/jameis-winston-uber-nfl-sexual-misconducting-groping/ https://www.thewrap.com/jameis-winston-uber-nfl-sexual-misconducting-groping/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 20:07:06 +0000 Tony Maglio https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1742507 The NFL is looking into a female Uber driver’s claim that Jameis Winston grabbed her crotch in 2016 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback was a passenger in her car.

“The allegation was shared with the NFL and we have reached out to Uber to request any information they may have,” a league spokesperson told TheWrap.

At the time of the alleged incident, Winston was a backup quarterback for the Bucs — he’s now the starter and a rising star in the NFL.

Winston, 23, who also denied the accusation through his attorney, posted the following statement Friday on Twitter.

A news organization has published a story about me regarding an alleged incident involving a female Uber driver from approximately two years ago. The story falsely accuses me of making inappropriate contact with this driver. I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her. The accusation is false, and given the nature of the allegation and increased awareness and consideration of these types of matters, I am addressing this false report immediately. At the time of the alleged incident, I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.”

“I am supportive of the national movement to raise awareness and develop better responses to the concerns of parties who find themselves in these types of situations, but this accusation is false. While I am certain that I did not make any inappropriate contact, I don’t want to engage in a battle with the driver and I regret if my demeanor or presence made her uncomfortable in any way.”

The driver, who spoke with BuzzFeed News and was identified only as “Kate,” said she was hailed to downtown Scottsdale, Arizona, at 2 a.m. on March 13, 2016. Winston, the lone passenger per her recollection, sat in the front passenger seat.

“I started driving, and right away, Jameis behaved poorly,” Kate said, claiming the former Florida State University star player was shouting homophobic slurs at pedestrians.

Winston then asked to stop for food. While in line at the Los Betos Mexican Food drive-thru, Winston “reached over and he just grabbed my crotch,” the driver said. He held his hand there for a few seconds before she said, “What’s up with that?”

“He’s an NFL quarterback and I’m 5 ft 6. I’m not prepared for that,” she later explained. “So I completely froze.”

Kate filed a complaint with Uber soon after the ride. Later, Winston was banned from using the service.

The alleged incident occurred nine months before Winston settled a civil lawsuit with a woman who accused him of rape in 2012, when they were both students at FSU. The terms of that settlement were never revealed.

“I did not rape or sexually assault [name redacted],” Winston said back then in a statement as part of an FSU code of conduct hearing. “I did not create a hostile, intimidating or offensive environment in the short period of time that we were together.”

Ads for a teddy bear modeled after Donald Trump have began airing on TV, once again raising the question of who is behind the Trumpy Bear?

The stuffed animal, with a red tie, a comb over and a 30-inch hidden in a zip compartment in its back, is being sold for two payments of $19.95 at GetTrumpyBear.com. It remains unclear who is behind the product.

The two-minute version of the ad that first went online in July, with shots of bears and eagles and stilted testimonials, plays more like a parody than an actual commercial, but the YouTube page links to a site where people can buy the stuffed animal.

According to Ad Age, the informercial has aired on 10 channels since last month, including Animal Planet and Discovery, with a clarification that “no endorsement is implied or granted.”

The site’s copyright is owned by Exceptional Products, a Dallas-based company described as a “direct response marketing company.”

‘Mad Men’ Producer Calls Matthew Weiner ‘Emotional Terrorist’ After Harassment Accusation https://www.thewrap.com/marti-noxon-matthew-weiner-sexual-harassment-accuser/ https://www.thewrap.com/marti-noxon-matthew-weiner-sexual-harassment-accuser/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 19:16:25 +0000 Jennifer Maas https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1742445 Former “Mad Men” senior consultant and producer Marti Noxon is not pulling punches when it comes to backing Kater Gordon, who has accused Matthew Weiner of sexual harassment.

On Friday, Noxon took to Twitter to describe the Emmy-winning show creator as an “emotional terrorist, who will badger, seduce and even tantrum in an attempt to get his needs me.” The writer-producer added, “everyone at ‘Mad Men,’ regardless of gender or position, was affected by this atmosphere.”

Also a former exec producer of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Noxon unleashed her opinion of Weiner and his behavior on the public — and it definitely wasn’t a good one.

Noxon was in full support of Gordon, an Emmy-winning writer who worked on AMC’s “Mad Men” series. Gordon came out last week accusing Weiner of asking to see her in the nude during one of their late-night writing sessions. When Gordon refused the request, she said she lost her job and her career suffered, as a result.

Weiner’s book tour for his debut novel “Heather, The Totality,” has been impacted by the accusations, with cancellations of several planned signings.

Here is the entirety of what Noxon wrote in support of Gordon on Twitter:

About a week ago Kater Gordon, a young female writer who worked on Mad Men bravely came forward with her account of being sexual harassed by Matt Weiner. While sharing writing duties with him, she recalls that he causally mentioned something to the effect of “you owe it to me to show me your naked body.” I believe her. I was at work with her the day after what she described transpired. I remember clearly how shaken and subdued Kater was — and continued to be from that day on.

Responding to her statement, Matt claimed he would never make that kind of comment to a colleague. But anyone with an even cursory knowledge of the show Mad Men could imagine that very line coming from the mouth of Pete Campbell. Matt, Pete’s creator, is many things. He is devilishly clever and witty, but he is also, in the words of one of his colleagues, an “emotional terrorist” who will badger, seduce and even tantrum in an attempt to get his needs met. This personality type can not help but create an atmosphere where everyone is constantly off guard and unsure where they stand. It is the kind of atmosphere where a comment like “you owe it to me to show me your naked body” may — or may not — be a joke. And it may — or may not — lead to a demotion or even the end of a career.

Everyone at Mad Men, regardless of gender or position, was affected by this atmosphere. Why did we not confront him more or report him to our parent companies? Well, for one, we were grateful to him for the work and truly in awe of his talents. For another, it was hard to know what was real when moods and needs shifted so frequently. Self-advocacy is important and I agree we all need to do it more and rely on less on faulty institutions to do it for us. But it is very difficult when the cost is, at best, fear and uncertainty — and at worst the loss of a job and ruined reputation.

Taking that action is one thing to contemplate if you have money in the bank and family to fall back on — but quite another for people from all walks of life without a safety net. And when sexual favors are lightly added to the bag of tools one might use to stay employed and valued, it can be destabilizing or even devastating. It may not be illegal, but it is oppressive. I witnessed it and, despite the fact that I was a senior consultant on the show, I also experienced it in my own way in my days at Mad Men.

I believe Kater Gordon.

You can see Noxon’s storm of tweets below.

Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic said goodbye to their radio and TV show “Mike and Mike” on Friday, after nearly 18 years together on ESPN.

“This is the part that will be a little difficult to get through,” Greenberg said at the very end of their final episode, as the co-hosts called their families to the stage.

“The most important words that I can think of today are ‘Thank You,'” an emotional Greeny continued to the audience. “Thank you to all of you for choosing this all these years.”

“Yeah, appreciate it very much,” a more stoic Golic added. “And as Greeny said, we’ll be around. I got a week, I’ll be back. He’ll be back in a few months. So, you’ll still get to see us, but this is the last time we can sign off together.”

Golic will continue in the time slot with Trey Wingo as his new co-host. Greenberg is set to begin a new morning TV show alongside Michelle Beadle and Jalen Rose, which will debut in the spring after ESPN completes construction on a new Manhattan studio.

‘School Girls’ Theater Review: How Tina Fey Inspired a Play Set in Ghana https://www.thewrap.com/school-girls-theater-review-how-tina-fey-inspired-a-play-set-in-ghana/ https://www.thewrap.com/school-girls-theater-review-how-tina-fey-inspired-a-play-set-in-ghana/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 04:00:24 +0000 Robert Hofler https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741474 Is there anything new and funny to be said about beauty contests? Jocelyn Bioh takes on that challenge in her new and very first play, “School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play,” which opened Thursday at MCC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre.

It helps that Bioh sets that most superficial of competitions in a girls’ boarding school in the Aburi Mountains of central Ghana. That’s the first tantalizing twist. The second is that these teenage girls are so thoroughly Americanized, and they become more so as soon as the beautiful and light-skinned Ericka (Nabiyah Be), a girl from the States, arrives to challenge the beautiful and dark-skinned Paulina (MaameYaa Boafo) for domination over the other less physically imposing classmates.

The play’s subhead, obviously, references Tina Fey’s 2004 film “Mean Girls,” and that direct allusion helps Bioh to set the action in motion in near-record time. Also, Rebecca Taichman directs her young actors to deliver their performances in bright, primary colors, and we know immediately who is the ringleader mean girl (Boafo), the overweight outcast (Abena Mensah-Bonsu), the smart nerd (Nike Kadri), and the two suck-ups (Mirirai Sithole, Paige Gilbert).

These girls speak in balloon captions, and what they say is often funny, especially when it comes to digesting and garbling American pop culture. Having lifted Fey’s movie title, Bioh knows of what she writes.

Bioh’s portrait of Headmistress Francis is much more nuanced, and Myra Lucretia Taylor fully embodies the character’s many facets. Francis is part mom, dictator, sage, cop, and, above all, moral guardian, who finds herself torn between giving the students an education and knowing that a Miss Ghana winner from her school could go a long ways toward paying for that education.

Taylor’s Francis grounds the comedy, and her scenes with a returning alumna, Eloise (Zainab Jah), crackle with unspoken but deep rivalry. Eloise won the Miss Ghana contest two decades ago, and it’s clear that back then she was the mean girl and Francis was the overweight outcast. Jah’s elegant assurance makes her Eloise a formidable foe who, unlike Francis, chose self over everybody else. Note to Taichman: When Eloise dusts the cafeteria bench before sitting down, it’s funny — the third and fourth times, not so much.

What disrupts the comedy, besides all that dusting, is Boafo’s Paulina, and it’s not entirely the fault of the actor’s cudgel approach to playing the popular bad girl. Long before Fey’s movie about the high school A-List, Clare Boothe Luce wrote the original mean-girls play, “The Women,” and wisely gave her nastiest character Sylvia (Rosalind Russell in the 1939 movie classic) most of the best lines. We may hate the cutthroat character, but Sylvia galvanizes our attention because we can’t wait to hear her next attack.

Paulina isn’t so lucky. The character is given barbs that are simply cringe-worthy. A typical retort: “Do you hear me? Or do you have food stuffed in your ears too, you f—ing cow?” Later, she calls the same classmate “a fat-a– daughter.”

Fey and Boothe Luce let their zingers deliver the message. Comedy can be serious business, but Bioh doesn’t trust her own humor. Late in “School Girls,” she gives us the Big Reveal Scene in which Paulina and Ericka expose deep childhood wounds to present themselves as reverse-image victims. Yes, underneath every mean girl is a lost girl.

“School Girls” runs under 75 minutes. When did plays become skits with a moral stuck on at the end?

Elon Musk Hates Turtlenecks and 3 More Takeaways From His ‘Rolling Stone’ Profile https://www.thewrap.com/elon-musk-hates-turtlenecks-and-4-other-takeaways-from-his-rolling-stone-profile/ https://www.thewrap.com/elon-musk-hates-turtlenecks-and-4-other-takeaways-from-his-rolling-stone-profile/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 23:19:48 +0000 Sean Burch https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741926 Elon Musk somehow finds the time for a growing number of budding projects: Tesla, his electric car company; SpaceX, his rocket company; the Boring Company, his underground tunnel solution for Los Angeles traffic; and the Hyperloop, his network of tubes rapidly moving passengers at several hundred miles per hour.

One thing he doesn’t have time for, though, is turtlenecks. In Neil Strauss’ extensive profile of the tech exec in Rolling Stone, Musk recounted one photoshoot where they tried to make him wear a black turtleneck — the trademark shirt of choice for Steve Jobs. Musk wasn’t feeling it.

“If I was dying and I had a turtleneck on,” Musk told Strauss, “with my last dying breath, I would take the turtleneck off and try to throw it as far away from my body as possible.”

The funny line stood out in an otherwise illuminating and dense piece.  Here are a few other moments that stood out:

Amber Heard dumped him, and it hurt

Twitter has been fascinated over the fact that Musk is a human that feels pain and emotion like any other non-Silicon Valley “god.” But a red-eyed Musk had to collect himself when talking about the end of his relationship with Amber Heard.

“I just broke up with my girlfriend,” Musk said in his office. “I was really in love, and it hurt bad.”

Musk then added: “Well, she broke up with me more than I broke up with her, I think.”

The exec then talked about how he was in “severe emotional pain for several weeks,” and needed to “psych himself up” to make it through a Tesla Model 3 event.

“If I’m not in love, if I’m not with a long-term companion, I cannot be happy,” said Musk.

He’s not a big fan of his dad

The South African native said at 10-years-old he felt sorry for his father when his parents split. With his brother and sister going to live with his mom, he decided to live with his dad.

“It was not a good idea,” Musk told RS.

While Musk said his dad was a “brilliant” engineer, he also said he was a “terrible human being.” The Tesla co-founder didn’t go into details, but made it sound severe:

“You have no idea about how bad. Almost every crime you can possibly think of, he has done. Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done,” said Musk.

Musk said he eventually bought his dad a car, boat, and house in Malibu after making it big in Silicon Valley, but has since lost touch with him. He was irked his dad had the audacity to say he helped fund his first company, Zip2, a claim Musk rejected.

What’s he working toward?

There are easier projects for rich guys to tackle than space exploration and getting the world off fossil fuel. But he told Strauss he wants to do “useful things” — things that have a “value to the rest of society.”

“It would be better if we mitigated the effects of global warming and had cleaner air in our cities and weren’t drilling for vast amounts of coal, oil and gas in parts of the world that are problematic and will run out anyway,” said Musk.

And he’s still dead set on making humanity a “multiplanetary species.” Going to Mars, in his mind, is a safeguard against mass-extinction — something he points out has happened five times. “Unless you’re a cockroach or a mushroom – or a sponge – you’re f—-d.”

Here’s How Al Franken Reacted to Trump’s ‘Access Hollywood’ Tape (Video) https://www.thewrap.com/al-franken-trump-leanne-tweeden-access-hollywood/ https://www.thewrap.com/al-franken-trump-leanne-tweeden-access-hollywood/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 20:37:26 +0000 Tim Molloy https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741748

Donald Trump drew outrage in October 2016 for his “Access Hollywood” boast about kissing and grabbing women without their consent. Now Los Angeles radio host Leeann Tweeden says Sen. Al Franken kissed her without consent on a 2006 USO tour — and produced a photo of him groping her while she slept.

So how did Franken respond when the video emerged of Trump talking about doing something very similar to what Franken is now accused of doing?

Cautiously.

Appearing on NBC’s “Late Night” just days after the 2005 Trump video emerged, Franken made light of Trump’s defense that his chatter with Billy Bush was just “locker-room banter.”

“I’ve been in a lot of locker rooms. I belong to a health club in Minneapolis — I think you can tell,” Franken told Seth Meyers. “Our locker-room banter is stuff like, ‘Is Trump crazy? … So I don’t know what locker room — he may work out with Roger Ailes.”

The conservative site Breitbart on Thursday called that reply “timid,” saying that he “seemed to hold his fire, not calling for Trump to step down as even other Republican candidates did.”

Franken also tried to turn the conversation with Meyers into one about Trump’s knowledge, rather than his behavior.

“I think these stories are gonna make it hard for Trump to focus on his message that he knows nothing about public policy,” Franken told Meyers.

During Franken’s Senate race in 2008, Republicans tried to use a rape joke he made while working on “Saturday Night Live” against him. In an interview with CNBC in September, Franken said his past conduct was nowhere near as bad as Trump’s.

“I would be happy” to compare the two, Franken said.

Lots of other people are making that comparison today. But we doubt Franken is very happy about it.

Al Franken says he’ll “gladly cooperate” with an ethics investigation after model and radio host Leeann Tweeden accused him of groping her and kissing her without consent while on a USO Tour in 2006.

“The first thing I want to do is apologize: to Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women,” said Franken in his statement. “There’s more I want to say, but the first and most important thing — and if its the only thing you care to hear, that’s fine — is: I’m sorry.”

Franken added: “I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.”

Tweeden said the former “Saturday Night Live” star forced his tongue down her throat when they were rehearsing a skit he wrote for the troops. On the way back from the Middle East, Tweeden added she was groped by Franken while she was sleeping on the plane — and included a picture in her blog post.

Franken’s statement comes on the heels of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calling for an ethics committee to investigate the Democratic senator from Minnesota.

“As with all credible allegations of sexual harassment or assault, I believe the Ethics Committee should review the matter. I hope the Democratic Leader will join me on this,” McConnell said on Thursday shortly after the accusation came to light. “Regardless of party, harassment and assault are completely unacceptable — in the workplace or anywhere else.”

Read Franken’s full statement below:

“The first thing I want to do is apologize: to Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women. There’s more I want to say, but the first and most important thing — and if its the only thing you care to hear, that’s fine — is: I’m sorry.

I respect women. I don’t respect men who don’t. And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed.

But I want to say something else, too. Over the last few months, all of us — including and especially meant who respect women — have been forced to take a good, hard look at our own actions and think (perhaps, shamefully, for the first time) about how those actions have affected women.

For instance, that picture. I don’t know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn’t matter. There’s no excuse. I look at it now and I feel disgusted with myself. IT isn’t funny. Its completely inappropriate. Its obvious how Leeann would feel violate by it — women who have had similar experiences in their own lives, women who fear having those experience, women who look up to me, women who had counted on me.

Coming form the world of comedy, I’ve told and written a lot of jokes that I once thought were funny but later came to realize were just plain offensive. But the intentions behind my actions aren’t the point at all. Its the impact these jokes had on others that matters. And I’m sorry its taken me so long to come to terms with that.

While I don’t remember the rehearsal for the skit as Leeann does, I understand why we need to listen to and believe women’s experiences.

I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.”

Al Franken Apologizes After KABC Radio Anchor Says He Groped, Kissed Her Without Consent https://www.thewrap.com/al-franken-grope-tweeden/ https://www.thewrap.com/al-franken-grope-tweeden/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 15:57:50 +0000 Sean Burch https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741496 Model and radio host Leeann Tweeden on Thursday accused Sen. Al Franken of kissing and groping her without her consent while they both worked on a USO Tour of the Middle East in 2006 — prompting the Minnesota Democrat to offer his “sincerest apologies.”

Tweeden said Franken, a former star of “Saturday Night Live” who was elected to the Senate in 2009, insisted on practicing a skit in which he’d kiss her on the lips, before they performed it in front of the troops.

“I suspected what he was after, but I figured I could turn my head at the last minute, or put my hand over his mouth, to get more laughs from the crowd,” wrote Tweeden in a blog post for L.A.’s 790 KABC, where she works as a morning news anchor.

When Tweeden relented, after several requests from Franken, and rehearsed the skit, she said he grabbed her by the back of the head and forced his tongue down her throat.

“I immediately pushed him away with both of my hands against his chest and told him if he ever did that to me again I wouldn’t be so nice about it the next time,” Tweeden said.

She said she tried to avoid Franken for the rest of the USO tour, but he grabbed her breasts while she was sleeping and posed for a picture on the plane ride home (Tweeden included a picture of a smiling Franken grabbing at her in her story).

“I couldn’t believe it. He groped me, without my consent, while I was asleep,” she wrote. “I felt violated all over again. Embarrassed. Belittled. Humiliated.”

Franken issued a statement on Thursday through a spokesman. “I certainly don’t remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann,” he said. “As to the photo, it was clearly intended to be funny but wasn’t. I shouldn’t have done it.”

Tweeden noted that she did not report her experience at the time to anyone at the USO or the Sergeant Major of the Army, who sponsored the tour; she did say she told her husband, Chris, a former Air Force pilot, about the incident.

Tweeden added she’s “still angry” at Franken, and was compelled to come forward after interviewing California Congresswoman Jackie Speier — who shared that she’d been sexually assaulted as a young aide.

“Every time I hear his voice or see his face, I am angry,” wrote Tweeden.

Kevin Spacey Update: London’s Old Vic Reports 20 Cases of ‘Inappropriate Behaviour’ https://www.thewrap.com/kevin-spacey-old-vic-20-cases-inappropriate-behaviour/ https://www.thewrap.com/kevin-spacey-old-vic-20-cases-inappropriate-behaviour/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 13:05:28 +0000 Tony Maglio https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741411 London’s Old Vic has released its findings after investigating accusations of sexual misconduct against actor Kevin Spacey. The theatre found that 20 cases of alleged “inappropriate behaviour” took place between 1995 and 2013, with all but two falling before 2009.

“In all but one case, those individuals alleging inappropriate behaviour by Kevin Spacey did not come forward at the time or asked that no formal action be taken,” per a Thursday release to media.

“Despite having the appropriate escalation processes in place, it was claimed that those affected felt unable to raise concerns and that Kevin Spacey operated without sufficient accountability,” the report read. “This is clearly unacceptable and The Old Vic truly apologises for not creating an environment or culture where people felt able to speak freely.”

The Old Vic, which was aided externally by law firm Lewis Silkin, pointed out that it has “not been possible to verify any of these allegations.” After all, no legal claims were made, nor settlements paid out. Spacey has not directly commented on the accusations.

A “deeply dismayed” Old Vic also revealed the following from its investigation

  • No correspondents alleged they were minors at the time that their complaint arose
  • The Trustees were unaware of the allegations
  • Staff who observed this behaviour claimed they were unclear about how to respond; in some cases they did not consider allegations of misconduct to be serious and, where they clearly did, they said they did not feel confident that The Old Vic would take those allegations seriously given who he was
  • The following factors may have contributed to this escalation problem: star power; lack of clarity of The Old Vic’s accepted code of behaviour; confusion regarding the impact of reporting misconduct; career insecurity; tribalism between operational and creative staff during his tenure causing information gaps
  • Calling out this behaviour could have been easier if there had been a non-formal and confidential mechanism in place by which complaints could be raised safely within the organisation

Going forward, the theatre will appoint “Guardians” to champion new best practices, and to be a first point of contact for those who do not want to use the formal channels of escalation. All workers will be re-trained on “OK-Not OK” behavior, and the theatre’s established victim-support counseling service will remain open 24/7 for the next 12 months.

“On behalf of The Old Vic Board of Trustees, to all those people who felt unable to speak up at the time, The Old Vic truly apologises,” Nick Clarry, chairman of The Old Vic, said. “Inappropriate behaviour by anyone working at The Old Vic is completely unacceptable. We will foster a safe and supportive environment without prejudice, harassment or bullying of any sort, at any level. We want anyone who works here to feel confident, valued and proud to be part of The Old Vic family.”

“I have genuine and deep sympathy for all those who have come forward and said they were hurt in some way by my predecessor’s actions. Everyone is entitled to work in an environment free from harassment and intimidation,” new Artistic Director Matthew Warchus said. “The Old Vic is now actively engaged in the process of healing and the process of prevention.”

“These allegations have been a shock and a disturbing surprise to many of us. It is incorrect, unfair and irresponsible to say that everybody knew,” he continued. “But as a result of the investigation, what we have learnt is how better to call out this behaviour in future.”

“These findings will help not only The Old Vic but our industry as a whole, as together we rapidly evolve an intelligent new standard of protection and support in and around the workplace,” Spacey’s successor concluded. “We are committed to a new way forward.”

The singer, who grew up in Long Beach, New York, under the name Gustav Ahr, died of a suspected overdose, music manager Adam Grandmaison told the Guardian.

Lil Peep got his start on YouTube and a with a series of mixtapes that owed as much to emo and hard rock as they did to traditional hip-hop. He released his first full album “Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt. 1,” in August.

On Wednesday, Lil Peep posted a video on his Instagram page saying that he “was lit” after taking six pills of the prescription drug Xanax, adding: “I’m good, I’m not sick.”

His manager, Chase Ortega, expressed his sadness at the news in blunt fashion: “I’ve been expecting this call for a year.”

Tributes to the rising star quickly poured in on Twitter.

“Peep had so much more to do man he was constantly inspiring me,” the electronica artist Diplo wrote. “I don’t feel good man.”

Is Virtual Reality’s Steven Spielberg Still in College? https://www.thewrap.com/is-virtual-realitys-steven-spielberg-still-in-college/ https://www.thewrap.com/is-virtual-realitys-steven-spielberg-still-in-college/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 02:24:31 +0000 Matt Pressberg https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741005 Virtual reality, which thousands of people are betting billions of dollars it will be a big part of the future of entertainment, is at a crossroads.

Equipment sales have hit a plateau despite price chops, and even for those who shell out hundreds of dollars for an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive and a gaming PC, there’s not exactly a Netflix-sized pool of premium content to wade their way through.

That shouldn’t be too surprising – after all, the entire technology is only a few years old. But fortunately, the next generation of potential VR impresarios – and maybe even its first Steven Spielberg or James Cameron – is already working on it, with the help of one California university who’s placed a big bet on virtual reality.

Chapman University in Orange, California, is the alma mater of Hollywood power players like “Stranger Things” creators the Duffer Brothers – who recently appeared at an event on campus. And its Dodge College of Film and Media Arts also has a virtual reality program where students are producing legitimately professional work. In an industry far on entertainment’s frontier without an establishment of any kind, there’s plenty of room for upstarts to reach the top.

Luke Snedecor, a sophomore in the school’s digital arts program, showed TheWrap a VR experience he created called “At Sea” where the user interacted with a fisherman on a raft. Bending your knees allowed you to look underwater, where you could grab fish using the Oculus hand controllers and toss them to the lone mariner. There was also an underwater mine to which TheWrap led a shark, using fish as bait, keeping the fisherman out of danger.

While the project did not have the budget of some of the virtual reality experiences that are coming out of massive brands or major studios, it was hardly amateur in comparison – and was more intuitive to play with than many commercial applications. As it turns out, professional-quality VR isn’t yet exclusive to any kind of professional class.

Snedecor, who’s only been developing in virtual reality for about a year, likes the idea of working in an industry without an establishment, especially as traditional media companies are still navigating their way through digital disruption.

“There’s hope,” he said.

Bill Kroyer, a veteran animation director who helmed “FernGully: The Last Rainforest” and currently serves as the director of the Digital Arts Program, showed TheWrap “The Harvest,” Chapman’s capstone – at least, to date – virtual reality project.

While too many virtual reality experiences TheWrap has seen seem like they were in VR for VR’s sake, “The Harvest,” in which the user is shackled to a chair in a barn – is ideal for the technology. The experience was made possible by sponsorship from chip giant AMD.

“There was a legitimate reason to put it in a VR experience and design elements to match that,” Kroyer said.

Rather than rely on CGI, the experience was filmed with real actors inside a 75-year-old barn at the Burbank Equestrian Center that hadn’t been cleaned in years.

“It looked like a demented guy would own this,” Kroyer said.

The rats, bats and spiders were all computer-generated, however. It was shot with one camera on a nodal axis. And there was also a VR game type experience and AR demo in addition with the main “Harvest” narrative piece.

Madeline Warren, an associate professor on the artistic faculty, said that while most schools are focusing their forays into VR on the engineering departments, Chapman has made a deliberate decision to base it out of the film school.

“A lot of the VR development has been siloed in engineering,” she said. “They don’t have the storytelling skills.”

And even though Kroyer is a Hollywood lifer, he thinks entertainment will be only a small part of VR’s eventual impact, paling in comparison to medical and educational uses. However, entertainment is likely to be the first way most people experience the technology, so there’s a lot at stake in creating compelling and engaging stuff.

Kroyer credits Chapman’s “salon” model for encouraging a cross-disciplinary look at VR – a technology that needs storytellers arguably as much as it needs engineers to build those experiences. After all, if we want people to dedicate more and more time to immersive experiences, those virtual worlds have to be interesting – and creatives can certainly help with that.

“This is a technology that would benefit from that thinking,” Warren said.

‘Latin History for Morons’ Broadway Review: John Leguizamo Explains It All https://www.thewrap.com/latin-history-morons-theater-review-john-leguizamo-explains/ https://www.thewrap.com/latin-history-morons-theater-review-john-leguizamo-explains/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 02:00:03 +0000 Robert Hofler https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1569591 The major cliché of today’s theater criticism is that even a slightly dystopian play must be reviewed through the discolored prism of Donald Trump’s presidency. Finally, I have to jump on that bandwagon. John Leguizamo gives us a one-man show that fully warrants unkind references to the 45th president of the United States, as well as to Rep. Steve King and Sen. Ted Cruz. (More of-the-moment targets include Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.)

It’s called “Latin History for Morons,” which opened Wednesday at Broadway’s Studio 54 after a successful run at the Public Theater earlier this year. While it’s an apt title, Leguizamo’s 90-minute show may best be enjoyed by theatergoers who are very familiar with the last 3,000 years of life in the Western Hemisphere.

This is not a warning, but there is that much history packed into “Latin History,” even though Leguizamo concentrates pretty much on the past 515 years, including such classroom clichés as Columbus and Montezuma and throwing in a few who are not, like Loreta Velasquez.

Even if you are one of the knowledgeable few who know all about this cross-dressing lieutenant in the Confederate Army, you will find “Latin History” both informative and hysterically funny in the way Leguizamo takes a subject, whether it be a mother’s funky leftovers or a nation’s mass genocide, and turns our perceptions inside out.

That will come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen Leguizamo’s previous stage shows “Ghetto Klown,” “Sexaholics,” and “Freak.” What is a real shock is Leguizamo himself in the flesh in 2017. Gone is The Strut that claimed the stage as his domain; in its place is a downright comfy vest-wearing professor-dad who can still do a mean rhumba or cha-cha but now pays the price afterward with the inevitable joint pain.

On stage at Studio 54, he recalls Christopher Lloyd in the “Back to the Future” films, and uses that same wired hair to magnificent effect to impersonate Andrew Jackson, among other heroes of the Trump administration, as well as Sigmund Freud.

Leguizamo’s writing and gift for mimicry, under the sharp direction of Tony Taccone, offer a trip through time that has little to do with Lloyd’s movies. “Latin History” is very much a lecture, but it’s never stuck in that classroom for long. It jumps between the bedroom of Leguizamo’s son (a middle-school student working on a term paper about heroes) to, say, the fall of the Mayan kingdom that borrows nothing from Mel Gibson’s “Apocalypto.”

It’s a surreal journey and most enjoyable in little offhand moments like Leguizamo’s pornographic commentary as he draws the Americas on a chalk board — or the way he bitch-slaps a theatergoer for laughing too hard at his jokes.

The only forced moments come when he makes the occasional visit to his psychiatrist. This guy sees a shrink? Otherwise, “Latin History for Morons” is the most fun you’ll have in a classroom since “Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All.”

Why Carrie Underwood, LeBron James and Shiva the Tiger Are TV’s Social Media MVPs of the Week https://www.thewrap.com/why-carrie-underwood-lebron-james-and-shiva-the-tiger-are-tvs-social-media-mvps-of-the-week/ https://www.thewrap.com/why-carrie-underwood-lebron-james-and-shiva-the-tiger-are-tvs-social-media-mvps-of-the-week/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 21:54:50 +0000 Fabric Media https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1741108 The week’s most emotionally reacted-to TV personalities and characters included a country music singer, an NBA star and a pet tiger. Yes, seriously.

TheWrap has partnered with Canvs, the emotion measurement company, for a weekly look at some of the characters and personalities that have TV viewers the most worked up on social media. The data below covers Nov. 8-14 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to television programs, including broadcast, cable, streaming and PPV.

The 51st Annual CMA Awards on ABC was the most emotionally reacted-to programming during the period measured, with 119,323 Emotional Reactions (ERs). Co-host Carrie Underwood stole the show, sparking thousands of (almost entirely positive) viewer comments.

People rushed to social media to praise the star’s looks and talent, with many simply stating that Carrie is perfection. Her tribute to the victims of the Las Vegas shooting was a particularly emotional moment for many people.

LeBron James was the most-mentioned player during the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. New York Knicks game (62,446 ERs), which was broadcast on local Fox Sports networks and the MSG Network.

In the first quarter, James got into a heated altercation with Knicks center Enes Kanter, which resulted in both players receiving technical fouls. The game continued to be full of mishaps, with the teams trading the lead until the Cavs ultimately took the win, with help from James’ 23 points and 12 assists. As per usual, viewer discussion was mixed, with some people applauding his skills and others hating on him.

AMC’s “The Walking Dead” (33,520 ERs) struck a chord Sunday night when Shiva, the beloved tiger belonging to Ezekiel, ruler of the Kingdom was killed by walkers. While deaths of fan-favorites often prompt large discussions, for some reason this one was particularly devastating to viewers (Shiva was the most-mentioned character of the night) — perhaps because while people die left and right throughout the show, an animal’s demise shows a different side to the horror brought upon this world by the zombie apocalypse.

Virtual Reality Has a Promising Future, But Is Still Loading https://www.thewrap.com/virtual-reality-still-loading/ https://www.thewrap.com/virtual-reality-still-loading/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 21:22:58 +0000 Sean Burch https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1740888 Virtual reality — with a few notable exceptions — is still a work in progress.

That’s what I was left thinking after leaving the Oculus LA holiday party on Tuesday night. The event itself was well done: set up at the trendy Mack Sennett Studios in Silver Lake, California, with plenty of open space and experiences to try out, a DJ spinning, and even an open bar (journalistic integrity kept me from indulging, of course).

But after checking out several of the experiences on hand, you couldn’t help but think there are still a few steps to take before VR reaches mass adoption. Confusing storylines, clunky interactions, and a sense that many of the experiences would be better as video games or short films often overrides the aesthetically breathtaking scenes playing out in front of you. Not to mention, wearing a headset is still a hurdle, compared to simply pulling out your iPhone and using an augmented reality app.

For example, take the new “Blade Runner 2049” experience. I knew it was a red flag when I put on my headset and saw the last person had given up midway through, but I pressed forward. I started off in a flying car traveling through future-LA, receiving directions from a blonde-haired woman on a screen to my right. What was she saying? I’m not exactly sure, since the DJ was blasting Daft Punk in the background, but it seemed like an important mission. I was able to play with some of the gadgets in the car, but they didn’t seem to impact anything happening on screen.

Next thing I knew, I was facing a man that looked vaguely like a brown-haired Louis C.K. in an underground cellar. And then I shot him … because he was a replicant or something? I’m not sure why I shot him — it wasn’t my call. The blonde-haired woman appeared again on screen and gave me more directions. She then showed me a replay of the brown-haired Louis C.K. being beaten up. I guess he wasn’t dead? (Sorry, I didn’t see the movie, either.)

Yours truly, “immersed” in “Blade Runner 2049”

After being told to look to a wall on my right and press the controller in my hand, a few nifty infrared documents flashed in front of me. If this sounds vexing, that’s because it was. Rather than wait to see if I’d actually do much else, other than passively going through the experience, I tapped out and took off my headset, too.

Undeterred, I also checked out an NBA three-point shootout experience. In the past, competitive or multi-player experiences have always seemed like the best bet for VR (think a next-level Nintendo Wii). But following body movements is still consistently inconsistent for VR. In my first round, I made an embarrassingly low three shots in 30 seconds, using my normal jump shot.

Looking to redeem myself,  in case anyone had watched my pathetic performance, I quickly went for round two. My score was much better, hitting 10 bombs and feeling briefly like Steph Curry. But it was fleeting, since I knew I was using a form that was in no way close to how someone would shoot in a real game — with my arms firing the shot the moment the virtual ball hit my virtual fingertips. Down the line, going head to head with a friend in an experience like this would be fun, but there’s still a disconnect between movements in reality and VR.

The rock climbing experience right next to me didn’t seem like a better bet, either. One attendee took off her headset and told TheWrap “I feel dizzy” — the dreaded line the industry has been fighting to remedy.

Still, this isn’t to say the event was completely in vain. Many of the experiences were eye-catching, including a Marvel “Powers United” vehicle and a journey through the “land of the dead” with Disney Pixar’s “Coco” companion piece. And Facebook’s “Spaces,” allowing friends to hangout in VR from across the globe, looks promising. But as another attendee put it, the experiences ultimately left the viewer feeling “really impressed by the technology, but not all that engaged with the actual experiences.”

VR has hit a purgatory stage, where the novelty is wearing off, but the technology isn’t full formed. These are hiccups you’d expect from an emerging industry. I look forward to checking out more next year, and hopefully not feeling compelled to take off my headset and re-enter “normal” reality.

Twitter Won’t Verify Roy Moore’s Account, But Gave Blue Check to Democratic Opponent’s https://www.thewrap.com/twitter-roy-moore-no-verification-democrat-doug-jones-blue-check/ https://www.thewrap.com/twitter-roy-moore-no-verification-democrat-doug-jones-blue-check/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 21:14:51 +0000 Jon Levine https://www.thewrap.com/?p=1740996 As national Republicans continue to abandon Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore in the wake of multiple allegations of sexual misconduct, the Republican has taken to Twitter to defend himself.

But ordinary Twitter users might have difficulty sussing out the real Roy Moore since the platform has consistently declined to verify his personal account on the social media platform and bless his profile with the coveted blue check mark.

The account of Moore’s Democratic opponent, Doug Jones, is verified.

Twitter declined to comment on Moore’s specific account.

A person familiar with the matter noted that even if Moore did submit a verification request, it would likely be withheld, as the company suspended the process after public outcry over the verification of white nationalist and Charlottesville, Virginia, rally organizer Jason Kessler.

Still, Moore joined the platform back in April and clinched the GOP nomination for Senate in September, more than a month before Twitter put the verification process on hold.

The platform often works with public figures, including those in government and politics, to help them use the platform effectively, according to a Twitter insider.

But for some reason, it seems that the company did the engagement efforts did not extend to Moore.

A spokesperson for the Moore campaign did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The clear disparity in Twitter street cred between the candidates could add fuel to longstanding accusations that the company has politicized the verification process by using the check as a reward (or punishment).

The company has long refused to verify WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, and withdrew the check from right-wing provocateur and former Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos as punishment for his conduct on the platform — before ultimately banning him outright.
